fishnwiz 3,290 Posted January 7, 2017 I am being given a case of racing motor oil by a buddy of mine and was wondering if it's possible to use this type oil in a small engine without any issues? I have not seen what grade the oil is yet.
goatfarmer 817 Posted January 7, 2017 It has more zinc in it, if that matters. As long as the weight was satisfactory, I wouldn't worry.
jimmystractor 171 Posted January 7, 2017 The only thing I would consider is using it in something else, maybe more "precious". I have a couple of old cars and I use high zinc oil in...something like Joe Gibbs racing oil can cost like $6-9 bucks a quart. Just food for thought.

I never priced racing oil . I think I would rather use it in my 57 Dodge instead.
isetta 50 Posted January 7, 2017 I use Valvoline VR1 in all my old stuff for the zinc content. Feel good about using it in old cars but don't know about value for tractors.
jlasater 285 Posted January 8, 2017 Non-detergent oils in small engines without oil filters.
jlasater 285 Posted January 8, 2017 Shell Rotella-T is also higher in the good stuff than most. I use it in my diesel truck. Not sure if it's available in the weight small engines need though, and it's detergent.

They have the higher zinc content we need. I run 15W40 but 10W30 is also available. Another brand would be Mobil Delvac. Ken
quantico 2 Posted January 14, 2017 I use straight 30 valvoline in my sunstars and Mobil 1 in other snow blowers and generators. The high zinc oil is expensive and great for a high value engine. Not sure it's needed in a tractor.
fishnwiz 3,290 Posted January 14, 2017 Thanks again You are correct. ..I had no idea that racing oil was soooo expensive! Guess I will be using it in my 1963 Roadster or Dodge truck.
