prez 0 Posted March 10, 2002 Where is it and what does it look like. Im not joking.I drained my transmission and when I went to remove the pipe plug on top of the transmission behind the seat there was nothing attached to it. Am I looking in the right spot? Priming the transmission? The manual says to remove the b wire from the coil. Which one is that. I have done alot of work in the last few months, seals, most of the o rings, front end, hopefully fixed the brakes painting ect.I cant wait to try her out. Thanks in advance
JeffG 0 Posted March 10, 2002 The 4040 doesn't have a dipstick in the trans. - that's why you can't find it! It has just a pipe plug, that's it. It has a little petcock (open it) at the right rear (looking towards the front of the tractor) lower corner of the transmission and fluid will run out when full. One the improvements made (adding a trans. dipstick) when the new 4041 came out the next year. I generally pull the dipstick from one of my other PowerMax's to check the level in the 4040. Most probably don't have that option. Remove the b+ wire from your coil to turn the engine over (without starting) to prime the hydro. pump. You'll see the + and - terminals printed on the top of the coil. Hope that helps and good luck. Jeff
prez 0 Posted March 10, 2002 Thanks Jeff for the info,my battery died before I could tell if I got all the bubbles out of the system. When there all gone should trans fluid just flow out none stop and if it doesnt does that mean there still some air in the system. It seams to start and stop but no bubbles came out like on a brake system.
JeffG 0 Posted March 11, 2002 You should get a good flow of trans. fluid out of the pipe plug on top of the hydro pump (when turning the engine over). It will kind of surge and will probably not be a perfect solid flow. Just as long as you don't notice any air pockets and the fluid flow is pretty good - you should be fine. You may need to add trans. fluid through the pipe plug and this procedure will definitely make a mess. Jeff
MPH 12 Posted March 11, 2002 I took a small plastic funnel and taped a piece of 3/8's gas line on it for a flex hose to add gear lube to the bgb and tranny on my tractors. Had to shave the end down a little to fit the hole but it has worked out very well..MPH
