Possible command carb/fuel issue

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a Sovereign 18 and the previous owner told me that you cannot idle the motor down without it shutting off.

I got it home today and put some new spark plugs in and drained the old gas. I put in a new fuel filter, premium fuel and some sea foam. It still runs pretty rough and you need to play with the choke. Also, as soon as you idle more than halfway down, without full choke, the motor shuts off. Would the consensus be I need the carb to be rebuilt? I don't want to chase things that aren't there. Also, the previous owner acted like it has always been like this...

Sounds like the idle passage is plugged with debris. I suggest cleaning the carb and make sure to remove the idle jet during cleaning. You may have to remove the plug covering the idle jet. I use a pencil grinder/Dremel with carbide ball end mill to mill a hole in the plug to remove it.

I concur with Bill. I did just this on a Cub Cadet 22hp twin for a friend last weekend. The emulsion tube/idle jet tube assembly had just enough gunk in it to keep the engine from idling properly. It would barely run at anything under half throttle. Cleaned the brass up with 0000 steel wool, blew everything out really well, and it runs like a champ again. Just squirting carb cleaner at it isn't going to work, you have to disassemble the carb all the way, and use properly fitting screwdrivers so you don't chew up the jets.

This happened to my Triad. I cleaned the carb and replaced the fuel filter and it happened again. I then replaced all components between the filter and the carb, hoses and fuel pump, and the problem did not occur again.

Hello glad I got on this site. I hope to upload a couple of photos of my Simplicity Broadmoor
Model 707 Tractor. I have replaced all the belts on it and installed a new ignition switch.
Have a mower deck which was in poor shape , repaced a couple of bushings and welded the
deck where there was some holes. The tractor and mower deck came from a friend and the
mower deck metal was getting pretty thin. Some new metal was put in it and we also undercoated the underside of the deck. This was done by my friend Greg Toulman.
I have not put the mower deck on the tractor yet, waiting for Greg to come home and give me a hand. Can you please tell me if there is a manual for the mower deck and where I could get one.
I would also like to get some moon wheel discs as well.
I will try and down load some photos of the tractor when my wife shows me how to.
I really love driving this tractor and also how well it is made compare today's tractors, especially the flexible rear end and the rollers.
      Tell the next time
      Paul
