Wards Twin Twenty Homecoming and Revitilization

Spent a bit of time over the past couple weeks cleaning up Troy's old Twin Twenty.  He and I had conversed quite a bit after he found the club, inquiring about his unique find and his desire to have a Simplicity variety.  I had been looking for a Wards for years, and since bringing my Allis 620 home last year, and falling in love with it, the desire for a blue tractor had grown, and the T20 was tops on my hit list.

The 620 was a 1 owner machine with under 600 hours on the clock and full documentation when I brought it home, and it operates flawlessly, so Troy thought it might be a nice step toward finding a suitable 9020 (which his Grandfather had once owned).  We picked a date, both took time off work, and I ran down there on a Thursday to meet him and make the exchange.  20 hours later, after a hot day on the road, I was home shortly after midnight and began making a punch list of things the Wards would need to return it to it's former glory.  The tractor is serial #8, and, in my opinion, in excellent original condition.

Troy was also thoughtful enough to commemorate the trip by creating an oak plaque in his 'hobby' room!  Quite a guy!

It wouldn't run well enough to drive, and was flooding badly.  I converted to a lower-flow electric fuel pump, and opened up the return fuel line.  I also found the timing to be off, and adjusted by the book.  With it running great, an oil change was in order, however I found the drain plug rounded off and stuck.  I tried numerous, less invasive methods to extract it, but in the end had to drill it out.

5947cb49d88f3_19055292_2001505920123296_4576354461333187113_o(1).thumb.jpg.c20b528fc0a24449b73acf96a1741064.jpg

The steering wheel was badly warped, and was replaced with a nice spare I had in the parts bin.  The hydro control lever was missing the ball for the detent, and I was able to replace that.  The fuel pump electrical was re-routed for better pump placement and wired to the key accessory vs a separate toggle on the dash.  I also returned the light switch to the dash, from below the seat where it had been relocated at some point.  I'm also adding a nice OEM rear worklight inside the right fender.

The LH side adjuster on the 3pt hitch received an OEM shoulder pin and adjuster knob, and one of the mid lift cables has been replaced.  I'm working on rehabilitating the original seat, as it seem to me to be unique to the Wards.  It shares the same shape seatpan as my Homelite T-16H, but has a different covering.  Interestingly, it is grey vs black, and I dig it.  In looking at the Wards literature here, I can see the pleat pattern is the same as what I have on my machine, and this seat also has remnants of the Wards decal on the seatback.  It appears to be the same as the ones missing on the fenders, and so I am waiting by the mailbox for the repops Clickitandstickit made up for me to arrive.

Finally, I removed all the panels possible, including the dash, gas tank, wheels etc, and gave it a thorough cleaning inside and out.  In the process, I found the rear PTO driveshaft coupler bushing were worn out and gone, so Phil was kind enough to share nylon bushings he uses (along with several other pieces and parts).

I'm not quite done, but getting there.  I have to finish up the seat repairs I have in mind, and the entire machine will get a thorough buffing and wax.

I am eagerly searching for a Goodyear front turf tire to match the original set, and need to find the heat shield for the CCKB Onan.  I would like to make this a sickle mower machine, and so I'm watching for one for the Pmax tractors.

wow that is one nice clean original tractor.

I agree...I'm very happy to have had the chance to bring one home.  My wife legitimately thinks I need counseling or medication now, however.  1400 miles in a day was too much for a sane person, it seems.

I promised I would be back same-day, and followed through.  I was in the drive at 11:57, but not in the house till 'the next day'.  My New York trip in the Spring was an overnighter, and I wasn't going to do that again.

Your t20 looks in amazing condition, in spite of the worn bits you mentioned, taintedmrgreen!  What year was it manufactured?  I am very envious of the ability you, and many other tractor folk, have to source parts.  I have just purchased a new starter/generator for $US119, post free to an address in the US.  Postage to Australia was quoted at $US206, via eBay!

Decals showed today 👍

I had to quickly de-goo and buff the side of one fender and see how they would look against the blue fenders and the white seatback.  You can clearly see where they were previously.  They are barely visible in the catalog pictures, and I had to do some research to get the design correct.

Knocked out the fenders tonite...beautiful evening to be out after all the heat and himidity we have had, but the compound dries much faster.

I use the buffer for the large spaces...it definitely works better and faster.  I use the cone buffer pad on a drill for the smaller areas and tighter spots, but buff sensitive or very tight places by hand.  For instance, when I get to the grill, I will do all of that by hand.  It will suck, but it will make me feel good and look nice.

Kudo's Josh for a really nice find for your collection. Low serial number Wards Twin Twenty and its starting to shine like a diamond - what a unique tractor!

Very, very nice!

And from straight on, the hood would make you think it's a Homelite.

Thanks!  I was very happy to meet up with Troy, and he and I are remaining in touch.  He seems extremely pleased with the 620 he received in return, and I'm trying to do him proud with the Wards.  I would like to find the 31" Float tires for the rear though.  I really liked those on my Allis.

I love the blue and white machines....with any luck, I'll do a tractor shuffle here shortly and get my blue tractors all together for a family photo dOd

Was able to finish up buffing out the blue, including the dash. The lighting wasn't great for pictures, but in the before and after photos you can see the paint finally giving a reflection. But...the rain came, so some nice glamour shots will have to wait. Instead, I re-set the timing (again), and installed the rear work light, checking another item off the list.

Washed...

Buffed...

Enough light to see some of the shininess and reflections.  Pictures really do it no justice.  My die grinder buffing wheel just wasn't working, so I did everything by hand.  Arms are so sore I may have to drink this weekend's beer through a straw.

It's looking amazing Josh! I know how your arms feel, done a lot of hand rubbing the last 23 years at the shop! Gotta stay away from edges with the power equipment rubbing on other people's cars!

Well, aside from searching for a few pieces I need and a front tire (maybe floats for the back if I can find some), and giving the seat a little love, Im all done.  Did my best on the hood tonite.  Had to be careful due to the rust damage that has occurred, but it really turned out sharp.
