Simplicity VB walker question

Recommended Posts

I picked up a walking tractor with a 24" mower today at a farm auction. Paid $55 for it and the engine runs ok... leaky carb will fix. Anyway the rest of the tractor is in a little rougher shape the trans needs some work and there appears to be a piece missing off the right hub, just behind the diff. Perhaps a grease fitting or something. If anyone could post a pic of the diff it would be most appreciated. I've never owned a walker so I don't really know what function this hole serves. Thanks, John PS As I tear this thing down I'll be posting a lot more questions.

Well I was right, It's a grease fitting. When I got the tractor the trans cover was loose and found the problem with the trans. The right timken cone "TC" apparently let loose allowing the trans pinion shaft "TPS" to slide to the right allowing the left "TC" to come out of the cup. There is some damage to the teeth, two or three chipped (not broken)some fine work with a file and I'll have gears that I can use and not chew themselves up. However the owner let the cover very loose and allowed water to enter the trans mission which overflowed into the gear case. Which is why I need to get the whole thing apart. Every time I take a two steps forward I wind up taking a step and a half back. Today I broke one of the bolts that hold on the left hub, I don't feel like fighting with it and am going to take it to a machine shop and have it removed. I have an extra but can't see breaking off a good part because of a cheap bolt. While I'm in there I should replace the housing assembly seal, the diff cover seal, and the oil seal for the "TPS" It looks like a simple fix is going to turn into a complete restore. Can you or someone else in the club give me step by step teardown instructions for the trans. I've never did one before so this looks simple enough but I don't get it. I took off the left "TC" on the "TPS" removed the retaining clip and took off reverse gear, but I can't get it out without removing the transmission pully shaft. It appears that this is the hold up. Once I have the tractor stripped down to nothing I'll take it to the machine shop to get the hub off... Did I mention the engine runs pritty good? This is going to be fun, I think I'll take pictures of the process and ask Kent to add it to the "How To" section. Thanks for your time, John PS When I finish this I think I'll be an expert with this model of tractor.
