Question on pto shaft

Recommended Posts

I'm trying tor remove the mid pto shaft (the one that drives the mower) from my sunstar. Be darned if I can get it to come off of the pto spline of the tractor. I'm guessing it is just a slip collar that you pull back to release, at the same time pulling back on the shaft. I don't know if the balls are stuck or the spring is out of place but I can not get the collar to come back any more than about 1/8" ,if that. I have sprayed it with penetrating oil and tried prying back on the collar while turning and pulling back on it but no go so far. Was wondering if anyone else has any "special technique" I could try?

Just an update on the stuck pto shaft. I was out where the tractor is on the weekend.I had sprayed the shaft/collar with penetrating fluid the week before. So, this weekend I tried prying on it with a large screwdriver--no go. I tried a larger pry bar but still it wouldn't budge, probably because I couldn't get enough leverage with a firm bite on the collar. Si, I scratched my head for a minute and then I remembered I had a set of fork style ball joint separators. There was one fork that slipped over the shaft nicely, between the collar and the front pto frame. One quick rap on the fork handle and the pto shaft came off like greased lightning. So if anyone else has this problem, if ya got a set of ball joint forks laying around, that might be your answer!

Hello glad I got on this site. I hope to upload a couple of photos of my Simplicity Broadmoor
Model 707 Tractor. I have replaced all the belts on it and installed a new ignition switch.
Have a mower deck which was in poor shape , repaced a couple of bushings and welded the
deck where there was some holes. The tractor and mower deck came from a friend and the
mower deck metal was getting pretty thin. Some new metal was put in it and we also undercoated the underside of the deck. This was done by my friend Greg Toulman.
I have not put the mower deck on the tractor yet, waiting for Greg to come home and give me a hand. Can you please tell me if there is a manual for the mower deck and where I could get one.
I would also like to get some moon wheel discs as well.
I will try and down load some photos of the tractor when my wife shows me how to.
I really love driving this tractor and also how well it is made compare today's tractors, especially the flexible rear end and the rollers.
      Tell the next time
