Sunstar brakes

Recommended Posts

So the brakes on my new sunstar basically do nothing but push the hydro lever to neutral. I don't think they actually have any stopping power. Any advice or links on where to start with adjustment or common things to check? The springs at the rear end adjustment nuts have like an inch of play, is that normal?

The Sunstar brakes are automotive drum style brakes.  Been a long, long time . . .   Slot in backing plate behind drum to adjust the spacing link.  You may need to remove drum.  The Sunstar service manual has the procedure I think.

What's the best way to get my hands on that manual?

On automotive type star wheel adjusters, the tool is just a wide flat end, like a big screwdriver, with a bent handle. 90% of the people just use a screwdriver. In fact, I just adjusted the star wheel adjusters on my truck and I used a screwdriver.

It was just that. I adjusted them with a screwdriver, got back on the tractor for a test, left one really doesn't brake much at all, right one makes a nasty noise when fully depressed. Think I'm going to just use the hydro until I make sure I don't have any other major issues with the new to me tractor that need fixing. If it holds up well throwing snow this winter I may devote the time to taking them apart and replacing the shoes in there (if those are even available anywhere). Thanks for he insights!

Hello glad I got on this site. I hope to upload a couple of photos of my Simplicity Broadmoor
Model 707 Tractor. I have replaced all the belts on it and installed a new ignition switch.
Have a mower deck which was in poor shape , repaced a couple of bushings and welded the
deck where there was some holes. The tractor and mower deck came from a friend and the
mower deck metal was getting pretty thin. Some new metal was put in it and we also undercoated the underside of the deck. This was done by my friend Greg Toulman.
I have not put the mower deck on the tractor yet, waiting for Greg to come home and give me a hand. Can you please tell me if there is a manual for the mower deck and where I could get one.
I would also like to get some moon wheel discs as well.
I will try and down load some photos of the tractor when my wife shows me how to.
I really love driving this tractor and also how well it is made compare today's tractors, especially the flexible rear end and the rollers.
      Tell the next time
      Paul
