New Project

I went to a farm auction on an Amish farm near me on Thursday. I made two purchases. I bought about 150 feet of 1 3/4 in. square tubing and another item. Today I used one 8ft length of the tubing to start a new project.  Here are some pics of today's labours. I started with two simplicity front axles and one piece of tubing and built this much.

I still need to make a detachable tongue and linkage between the steering arms to make it four wheel steer, and some mounting pads need to be welded on so I can install the other item I bought at the auction. It is an IHC U4 power unit.

The power unit was complete and together when I bought it but I had to remove some of the sheet metal to load it on my trailer without bending anything. Only things missing are the plug wires and the crank. It has a magneto ignition and no other electrics so I am looking for a crank now..Don't think I will add a starter.  I have two other power units waiting for their own cart and then I will have four mounted including my big 363c.i. Continental unit that I built a trailer for last year. Not garden tractors but still fun.

Wow! You have a very similar idea that I want to start this winter.  I have 2" square tubing, two large frame axles and 5 kids and wife who want a wagon to ride in!!

This picture is of the kit available from northern tool I am using as an idea base.

Awesome build!!

I like the build Dave. Have thought about a building a replica of a hayrack but 4 wheel steer is cool.  Love those power units. Should be able to find a crank of the Farmall unit easy enough. So there are Amish communities in Ontario too; interesting.

I see the firewood wagon I need to build.........

Please post some more when you have the steering tongue fabbed up.

Not that I need another project right now.  In the middle of a major kitchen renovation, fall leaf season, but woodstove season is close.

Gene; yes, we have a large horse & buggy Amish community  near me. There were about 80 adult males at the auction and a lot of their wives and children as well. We also have many low German speaking Mexican Mennonites in my area. They are the descendants of Mennonites who emigrated to Mexico in the 1930's and are now coming to Ontario for work. They are a close knit community of hard working people but they drive cars and dress like most everybody else.

Greg; will do on the pics. I need to put mounting pads on the cart for the power unit. I am thinking I will have to make the linkage from front axle to the rear go under the power unit and above the cart rails. If I was putting a flat deck on it I would put the linkage under the rails. Going to do more on it tomorrow so we will see what happens. I also want to put the narrower tires and rims off FDT's on it for looks and easier steering. Have to figure out the tongue pivot point and a way to attach it to the tie rod for the steering.

Dave; they are mostly for my own pleasure but I do sometimes take them to tractor & engine shows to display. I just like to hear them run.sm06

Could any of those units be used to run a pump or generator or ??  What did they run originally?  You're preserving some living history.

Dave not to question your fab skills but are you going to gusset each axle ?

just thinking with the weight of engines on axle they may want to twist, just thinking , tell me shutup anytime  666 LOL

PGL; the large Continental ran a standby water pump for the town of St Mary's Ont. It has a total of 122 hrs. run time on it. The blue 4 cyl. Continental ran a stacker for topsoil from the screening plant. The little 2 cyl. Wisconsin ran a small stacker and the IHC unit was used by the Amish to run multiple things; probably a silage cutter/blower and feed grinder and anything else they could belt it to.

Lloyd; there are pieces of angle iron welded from the underside of the top rails to the inside face of the axles. They just don't show up well. Also there is a piece of tubing welded between the original pivot points to give it rigidity. It ain't going nowhere!!!

Today I made a pivot for the steering and attached it to the front axle tie rod. I also made a link between the front and rear steering arms. I will try it this way but may have to put a small brace across the 90 degree ends. I still have to make a detachable tongue/handle and put FDT wheels and tires on it.

I like what you have done so far, but don't you need a pivot where the steering arm attaches to square tubing tying front steering to rear?  It looks like it is turning both axles, but I would expect it to bind, or limit your steering travel.

Ken; the bolts through the link and into the steering arms are the pivot. There is a nut on both sides of the steering arm to secure the bolts and the link pivots on the bolts.

I wasn't happy with the steering geometry so I changed it today and built a detachable handle. I mounted the engine tonight and with the weight on the cart I see the need for one more small modification to the steering. In the meantime i can now move it in and out of my shop with relative ease.

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
