Your starter's still sick.  Not sure why though, maybe not spinning fast enough?

Here's a short video of a starter from a Triad.  I believe the starter is OK:

And here's a Zippo video about starters if you want to check if your assembly work:

Thanks for the response. I'm 99.9% sure I assembled it correctly. I did notice a small chip in one of the brushes so maybe that's it or the armature is messed up? I'm looking at used OEM starters on eBay for around $40. Not sure if I should do that or get one of the brand new knock offs for $50.

Can you manually (by twisting the gear counterclockwise) get the gear out to the end?  There is enough drag on the brushes that you should be able to do this, if not then you could still have some drag or interference on the bendix shaft.

I still wonder if you have enough voltage and current to make that starter throw the bendix out.  When I have bench tested Kohler starters, (using a good battery) I can't hardly hang on to them because they jump so violently.   I always put them in a vise.

The starter spins just fine by hand. I ended up replacing the battery. Sam's tested it a few weeks ago and said it was good but I still it was part of the problem. The old battery was from 2012. After getting the new battery I tested the starter again and it seemed to be functioning properly (video below). I was stoked and put everything back together but the damn thing still won't start. There's a second video of what it sounds like now. Sounds like the starter is spinning but it isn't even trying to fire up.

This thing is driving me crazy :P It's almost mowing season so I need to get this thing running.

After performing all the tests & repairs you have, I'm thinking it may be time to replace the armature.  If you have a starter, alternator, generator shop around, I'd take it there.  I had one on a 917 Allis M-18 re-power that had to be replaced as it suffered the same symptoms as yours.  Those shops I think are harder to find than engine machine shops.

The video showing you trying to start the tractor...the sound tells me the bendix is still not traveling out to engage the teeth of the ring gear.

It seemed to be working fine before in the 2nd video before I put it back on the tractor. I have a "new" used Kohler starter arriving in tomorrow so I'll try that out next.

Messick’s has the stone guard for $32. The number supersedes to 1677261ASM. Jack’s is overpriced and shipping from them to here in the Midwest takes too long.

Just checked the link.  Odd, the Simplicity part is listed at $74.59 but the same part number is listed for Ferris is listed at $32.65.

Maybe old Ferris stock??

I didn't know Simplicity and Ferris were Brigg's labels and shared parts.  I knew Snapper was.

Yes, Briggs owns Ferris. Compare a few of the high end zero turns by Simplicity, and the only difference between them and the Ferris is the color.

Got the "new" starter yesterday. Put it in last night and she started right up! Such a good feeling. Hopefully this is the last problem I run into. Just need to do a few things to finish putting the thing back together and clean her off and I can finally be done! :D I guess the armature was the issue on the previous starter. Kind of strange I never had starter issues before sending it to the shop.

This one turned out to be a challenge for you because it was not a real common problem that you see everyday. Believe it or not this was a learning lesson for a bunch of members including me.

A few members had an idea on the starter itself being the problem but issues like this one are hard to diagnose when you don't see it 1st hand.

Glad you are up and running.

Kudos to the membership on figuring this one out!

I thought today was going to be the day I finished everything but of course I ran into a couple problems. I promise I'm almost done asking these silly questions. First problem is I put the blades on the mower deck but after tightening the bolts on the top and bottom the pulleys and blades won't spin. I don't see how I could have put the arbors together incorrectly but I'm not sure why they aren't spinning. I hand tightened them down with a ratcheting wrench. My second issue is after I mounted the gas tank and battery I went to start the tractor and it wouldn't do anything. I looked and noticed one of the wires connecting to the ammeter gauge had come undone because it's got a lose connection. I put it back on and it tried to start but then stopped. I looked at the 20A fuse that's next to the battery (not sure what it's for) and saw it was blown. I replaced it 2 times and they keep blowing as soon as I turn the key. Any clue what could cause these problems?

If I remember right, Simplicity bought Ferris many years ago, before Snapper and before Briggs.

Correct. Simplicity bought Ferris in 1999. Then bought Snapper in 2002. Briggs bought all in 2004.

I put new connectors on the ammeter wires and that seemed to fix my electrical issue. Just need to figure out why the blades/pulleys aren't spinning on the mower deck and then I'm DONE!

I'm all finished up. Does anybody know how I can edit the thread title and the first post with the link for the pictures?

I think maybe because it's an old post I can't edit it. I see the edit option on my last post but not on any of the older ones.

You probably have to be a paid up member  to edit your posts, IIRC.
