12 hp synchro -balanced replacement

a friend has a HB212 with a synchro bal motor .  the motor smokes but  he's  got a new 16 hp that is not a synchro balanced  will this work or not he is worried about it shaking

Depends on the 16hp Briggs.  If it is a I/C engine the it should work, but I don't know if it is the newer Intek if it has the same footprint and centerlines to work in the HB212.  The newer engines had the counterbalance internal and not the external balance gears, not quit as good as the external but as good or better than a Kohler.

That 16hp should also be Syncrho-Balanced. It just only has a balancer under the flywheel. The 12hp and 14hp engines had balancers on both the flywheel and PTO sides.
