Most likely it's rings.  However there has been discussion before on breathers not functioning due to degraded rubber valves.  The updated replacement uses a metal reed.  I still think its rings.  To correctly determine the culprit, you should perform a compression test in conjunction with a leak-down test to determine the area of failure.  These are very good engines if taken care of & monitored.  If it is a Series 2 engine it is even better & parts easier to find.

That's the short answer according to MHO.  If you search the posts you will see a plethora of information regarding the Kohler KT-17 & KT-19 Series 1 & Series 2 engines.

If the price is right & it's a Series 2 engine, it should be repairable.  But you don't want to wait until the rod breaks & grenades through the side of the crankcase.

Not sure if you have a series 1 or series 2 engine. The series 1 are prone to piston damage from carbon buildup on the ridge of the cylinder. As ShaunE said, these series one engines can be extremely expensive to repair IF you can find the parts.

Hope and pray it's the reed valve in the breather and not piston damage.
