Spring on snowblower lift rod mandatory?

 The spring on the lift rod is causing some tire interference. This is on a late model Sovereign. If I take the spring off, I'm fine. Is it mandatory?

Without the spring, you won't have any floating down pressure.  Either total float or "fixed rod" depending on how you setup the end of the rod.

Do you have the correct rod?  With the correct rod and a RBT snowblower with standard lift arm, there shouldn't be interference.  Some pics of my 75th setup:
