Next project. More pics added 2018/01/28

I bought a bunch of 1 3/4in square tubing at an Amish auction near me in October. I used some of it to build a cart for my IHC U4 power unit but the rest was just sitting by my shop door in the weather. Yesterday I moved it all inside and started my latest project. I am making the top 3ft by 7ft for my motorcycle and will also make two side extensions 6in wide so my garden tractors will fit as well. The wide rear axle on the Bolens Ridemaster will also fit with the extensions. Will also be heavy enough built to lift my 620. There will be further pics as the work progresses.

Did some more fabricating today.

Welded support tubes into the side pieces and then welded the base unit together. I have made it so the jack can be removed after the safety support (not built yet) is in place. Some people dedicate a jack to their lift but that seems like a waste of resources to me. Here is today's progress. Probably won't do any more til after Christmas.

Admire your skill and thought process.  Will be very useful.   Way beyond my simple mind!   LOL.

I think a lot of you guys sell yourself short a lot of these mods are rather simple and nor requiring a lot of thought'

Not trying to downgrade everyone or start a fight but with a little cokesing most could probably do a little more than you give yourself credit, anyway just my thoughts

What Lloyd said. Most of my projects are not that complicated. It is amazing what you can do with a chop saw; bench and hand held grinders; drill press; stick welder;  hand tools and a bit of thought and planning.

Lloyd; had a couple of friends over today for some "holiday" beers and a BS session while looking at the lift. Guess it will be time to get back to it tomorrow.

Went out to the shop today to continue on my bike/tractor lift. I welded the "feet" onto the side rails of the top platform and did a couple of small re-engineering jobs to make everything line up nicely. Put the bolts in temporarily and clamped a crossbar in so the jack lifts the platform. Tomorrow I will grind the welds on the inside of the frame side pieces so the cross members will fit in tightly and then weld the top frame together. Progress is being made slowly but that's OK because with retirement comes all the time you need for stuff like this....Dave

Did some more on my lift today. Ground the inside welds flat so the cross members fit tight and square for welding. Welded the top platform together and added the cross members to the legs for stability and a lift point for the jack. Still need to make the safety latch mechanism and a detachable ramp; paint it and put some kind of surface on the top. Side extensions for garden tractors will come a bit later.

Coming along nicely, definitely gets nice and low for loading. It will be easy to get non running machines on. dOd

Lloyd; I will build the ramp and the safety latch mechanism before painting it. I am looking for appropriate wood for the top right now.

Anyway looks good and keep em comin.

Were you thinking of putting columns (square or pipes) around the corner posts after lifting? You cold drill holes to adjust the supported height.  The jack could be moved for other use.  Good work.

Dave, you are inspiring me. I was thinking of buying a HF motorcycle lift to modify for garden tractors but I like this idea better. It's heavier built and I like the ability to use a floor jack that I also need to buy but can use for multiple jobs.

A gteat job, and thank you for all your photos.  Have you thought of marketing your plans, or sending a Salesman Sample (full size) to Australia for me to demonstrate, in my workshop!!!  LOL!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Spent some time in the shop today and came up with a safety support system for my lift table. I thought I had more angle iron for the stops but if I do I can't find it. Will pick up some on Monday. At the present time with the support on the stop the surface height is 31 1/2 in. I will put another stop on it so it will sit at 24 in. as well. I need to get some 1/8 in. steel cable and a couple of pulleys to make a release for the support and I am still looking for a piece of 3/4 in. plywood for the top. I don't want to spend what they want for the plywood but I may have to.
