crank crank crank

My AC314 runs great, but it takes forever to get started.  I set up the carb as in the manual, but it just seems to take a lot of cranking to get fuel into the engine to fire.  If I use ether, it fires immediately, so I know it's a fuel delivery problem.  Any suggestions of what to look for?  Engine is Kohler 16 hp.

Check for gasket leaks on the intake piping.  Maybe loose bolts or ripped gasket.

If you spray ether near the joints with the engine running and it speeds up, you've found the problem area.

I am certainly not the last word on this topic but I would first check for a clogged jet.  Then I'd look at the float level (not opening properly).  It could also be a faulty fuel pump.  I see PhanDad has already replied and he is more knowledgeable that I.

Does it start right up, when warm or sitting just a few minutes, or only when it has sat awhile?   Does the carb leak?  Is the gas draining out of the carb?

Does your engine have the primer lever on the fuel pump, work the lever a few times before starting, see if that helps.

Thank you all.  Even warmed up it takes some effort.  No leaks in the carb.  I do have the primer pump, I'll give that a go.  Is the jet the screw at the top of the carb that goes all the way through to the bottom?  The fuel pump definitely pumps, because when I do it by hand, it gets harder the more pumps I do.  I think it's building pressure in the bowl.  I will try to set the fuel bowl to specification and see what does.

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
