Brent_Baumer
I soaked this really rusty log chain piece overnight in 50 degree solution. That removed about 5 percent of the rust. I soaked it again after warming the solution up by putting a heater next to the bucket last night out in the garage. (The wife doesn't yet believe "some guy on the internet" and won't let me keep the stuff in the house). http://ourworld.cs.com/Bcbaumer/rustchain.jpg
Brent_Baumer
Here is what the chain looks like now. I might even be able to get the nut off the holds the hook....I selected the chain and the socket set for testing because they were both extremely rusty and neither could have possibly been sanded. Sand blasting would also have been a major chore. A rusty old tool box is next. We'll see how long this gallon of potion lasts. MPH
If you can keep it in a metal wash pan looks like a perfect spot for an oil pan heat pad. Maybe its the high quality chain you de-rusted that has you wife leary of 'some guy on the internet' Sure looks nice and clean..MPH
thedaddycat
Can you find some really rusted fasteners to try it as a penetrating oil? Somewhere that you can't put it in a pan, but have to let it creep, like where most of the really stuck ones seem to be at...
Brent_Baumer
I know it seems a waste of chemical to de-rust an old log chain and socket set. 1 gallon of "stuff" will supposedly treat 25 sf of heavy rust and I figure in order to really test the stuff I should put some of the rustiest items I have in it. I don't think the chain and socket set together are close to 25 sf so what the heck. So far I'm pleased with the results. Now to start on de-rusting something worth the $. The best part of this experiment so far was when my wife made the "some guy" comment. She added that if the FDA or EPA said it was safe then she'd believe it. Man is she clueless - or at least more trusting of the gov. than I am. Brent
