I can't say I have heard of such a thing.  I wonder if it's fully engaging?  It should have a pretty positive 'click' once it sits into one of the two gear sets.

it does not do that. its always been difficult to shift into either range. just recently starting popping out of gear. very strange setup to me.

i had that thought to but didnt seem like it was. i must have something together wrong. i put it on last year when i got it. took the best parts of 2 and made myself one nice one and made one to sell. wish id have kept the stock pulley.

Check the set screws that lock it to the shaft, they like to loosen up and then the unit slides and doesn't shift completely.
