New to the group,

Just got a simplicity 9020, been sitting for 20 years, it was my wife' granddads.  I got it running today,  but when put in gear it will only move a few feet and wants to stall. Same in reverse. It' not the brakes because will roll in nutrual.  It has the hydrostatic  in it and I can' figure how  to change fluid. Thank you in advance

Sitting on the seat looking down the temperature sending unit is directly below you on the left hand side of the transmission, remove this to drain the oil.

At the rear of the seat you'll find a four sided plug, once removed this is your fill location also attached to the plug is your dip stick.

But I'm betting the farm that you have internal problems with your hydro, sounds to me the motor end has let a few piston sliders let go.

Has someone recently or in the past towed this 9020.

Never towed it was bought new by her grandad he got sick and died,  but he was using  it till he died. That was 20 years ago, it has just been sitting. I cleane carb ,new battery ,plugs, and it cranked right up, puts like a kitten.it will move but not far.

  • After draining the oil examine the it for brass, make the oil shimmer in bright sunlight like aluminium paint..

Here's the repair manual for your 9020 hydro.

The link will expire in 30 days

If you downloaded the hydro manual from the link I posted, the diagram shows a charge pump at the front of the hydro. The charge pump feeds oil to the piston motor as well the hydraulic system for the 3 point etc..

The hydro motor has priority over accessories.

Worn charge pump gears will give poor performance on the 3 point lift while a broken shear pin give no tractor mobility nor any action at the 3 point.

The shear pin in some cases will break into three short pieces jamming just enough to allow the 3 point or the tractor to move with out any load. Giving the illusion everything is tippy top, then under load crap put on ya.

Inside the manual I have linked to, it shows you were on the hydro unit the test ports are located and what pressures to expect on your test gauges.

When you changed the oil did you also replace the hydraulic filter.

Thank you, you have very helpful. Yes, today I changed filter  and fluid 3 times. Every time I changed it , it g t better. Now the hydrolc  3 point  is working,  and is moving foward to reverse as I think it shoukd. Tomorow  I am gonna hook up the original bush hog to it and see it how it goes. Again thank you for your help.

Whatever you do DO NOT put an automotive oil filter on the transmission. They are way too restrictive and cause similar problems. Frams are about the worst. Use a hydraulic filter from Simplicity or a direct crossover from NAPA  or another manufacturer with the same specs as the OEM Simplicity filter.

The swash plate pivot shaft area is another wear/failure point.

Baldwin and Donaldson is another good filter. I also install FilterMag on all of my filters, engine and hydro.

Any one know where the release is for this transmission, so I can tow one?...Thank you

There isn't one that I'm aware of.  Shift the transmission into neutral & tow away.  It's a 3-Speed.  The diagram decal may be worn off the PTO shaft cover in front of the seat.
