Lost_Cause 0 Posted April 12, 2002 My first simplicty and hydro trans (a 1968 3112h)so go easy on me. Went out to feed the lawn today and when I turn mostly to the right there is a clunk and hesitation. I check the traction screws and adjusted them to the manual specs, still does it. When I go straight there is no noise. Any ideas. Thanks Rob
SmilinSam 4,243 Posted April 12, 2002 Sounds like you will have to take the differential apart and see if any of the teeth or gears are broken and check the keyways for damage. I'd pull the housing first without splitting it and see if there is anything out of sorts with the big keyed gears and keyways on the axle. You can look at the gears inside the housing then for damage. Usually the problems will be readily noticable . Sam
Guest Posted April 12, 2002 thanks, I went out and took a closer look and when I just push it you can see the differential jump when you here the noise. Is there anything I should be aware of when I take this off?
SmilinSam 4,243 Posted April 12, 2002 Not Really. Take off the outer collar and the hub should pull off the shaft. Then Undo all the nuts that hold the differential to the backing plate(collar thas keyed to the axle tube). Pull the diff housing off the bolts but be careful not to get them out of place( on the newer tractors this is easier as the bolts are reversed and come off with the housing). Then there is a retaining ring that holds the gear on the shaft. It needs to cme off. MAKE SURE you place all the parts on a paper or something IN THE ORDER in which they came off. This so you can get it back together in the right order. It may be cheaper to put a good used differential back on depending on what damage you find. Make sure to rmove the keys and inspect the keyways in the axle for damage too. I have seen some stripped completely out before. No way to tell whats wrong without looking.....
