Overheating PTO?

Hi All!

Have a prestige 23 giving me problems. I was having issues with the electric PTO not  engaging after shutting off when warm...adjusted 1/4 turn (on 2 occasions) blades engage great now. However, when it starts to get hot(while engaged) now the engine starts to shutdown until I shut off the PTO and push brake/clutch in.....it almost seems like it's dying from fuel starvation. I'm thinking(but don't know) there is a safety in the PTO to shut off engine? Or Is there a safety switch I should be looking for? Maybe I adjusted too far?

On the same note...is there a trick to getting the PTO off the  shaft? The bolt comes out no problem, but I can''t get the clutch off, and I don't want to pry on anything too much if I'm just missing something.

I do love the newer Prestige, but the old 7016 sure was a lot simpler!

Thanks for any and all help...you guys are a wealth of knowledge!

Well, I managed to get the PTO off ......and put back on properly this time. Previous owner didn't have it on the  'stop rod'....Maybe over rotation was the issue?  Now if the rain will stop, i'll be able to test it out.

Still don't know if the overheating would have shut off the engine.

No, there was enough slack in the wires to keep from pulling on them. Have just been out mowing..TRYING to anyway.... still having the same  shut down issue. Engine starts to  die , digital dash shuts off. If I'm quick enough on the brake and shutting off the PTO,  it will come back to life. When I'm not, it will restart with no  problem...the PTO will engage with no problem.... sometimes will run/mow fine for 10 feet...sometimes for 20 yards! It has to be(i hope) one of the safety switches shorting out maybe?

Is something else heating up and putting drag on the engine? Maybe mower deck or bearing in a pulley or something?

the only thing that SEEMS to be getting hot is the PTO....but the fact that everything starts right back up is what's confusing me.  I called local dealer and he suggested a loose ground, but i'll be damned if i can find one.

I tend to agree with the dealer. Loose does not always mean that the bolt is not tight. Remove the wires, clean the ends, and the location of the grounds on the engine/frame. I would also check the deck bearings to be certain that they are all free turning. Check belt routing, also. I have seen other brands of tractors that have problems until the belt routing is corrected. If the PO missed the stop rod, he might have made other mistakes, as well

Made this response a few days ago to a question about the electric clutch on an Agco Allis 1692460:

Sometimes folks with the newer tractors have problems with a poor ground since the ground is usually through an interlock module vs straight to ground.  The IM messes up and causes a voltage drop on the ground side and the electric clutches don't like that.  Usually if an item is low in voltage it increases the amp draw to get the same power and the resulting extra heat, in time, ruins the item.

You could try taking the ground side of the directly to ground and see how it responds.  If it works OK, add a relay to cut the ground  when the starter is engaged.  That achieves the basic safety feature of older tractors like my Homelite T-12 (tractor won't start if electric PTO switch is on.  Once the engine's running, it's up to the operator to "be safe".

Could be your issue also.

Thanks everyone for their ideas and input. The problem turned out to be the PTO clutch. While I could get it adjusted to the correct gap, it had worn down far enough that the housing (the adjustable plate) was  grinding and overheating.

Thanks to a new clutch, and the upgraded pulley& stop, she is now running like a top again!
