AC716H ~ Electrical problems

Recommended Posts

It would appear that the alternator/generator in the Kohler K341S on my 716H is dead or not functioning. The battery is not receiving a charge and if I don't put a charger on it after every few cuttings, the tractor get's harder and harder to start. I'm not really familiar with the Kohler engines (yet) and need to know what to test. I have a DVM and other electronic test gear to use.[A href='http://www.wheatfarm.com']http://www.wheatfarm.com[/a]

In the Simple Tractors 'Service' area there is a discussion by Al Eden about Kohler electrical systems that may be helpful. Carl [A href='http://www.simpletractors.com/service/kohler_electrics.htm']http://www.simpletractors.com/service/kohler_electrics.htm[/a]

the manual I have on the AC's says to first check the voltage at the "B+" terminal on the regulator, while this wire is plugged in; the B+ wire is the lower terminal and the 2 upper terminals are the "AC" terminals. This test is done with the engine running at 3600 RPM annd no loaad. If this voltage is 13.8 or higher, next put a 5 amp load on the system, turn on the lights. If the charge rate increases, then the system is OK. If the charge rate does not increase, then perform next test. Unplug the 2 AC leads and check voltage between them with volt meter, ** set to AC volts. If it is less than 28 volts, then it is a defective stator, and must be replaced. If it is more than 28 volts, defective regulator and must be replaced. travis
