B110 project from 3 junkers

Recommended Posts

I recently bought this poor 3110v as a parts tractor. I took the hood, grill, mid PTO, and the rear lift to put on my 3112h that had wrong parts on it. That left me with what is in the picture, as well as a B112 hood and grill, and a bunch of parts off a 64 landlord I have in stock.

The motor doesn't smoke, so I will be able reuse it. It has a pipe stuck in the exhaust that I'll have to get out.

The dash has a lot of rust from a leaky battery and will need new metal welded in.

It doesn't have a mid PTO, so I'll steal one from the 64 LL.

The steering gears are trashed, so I'll adapt the old 2 gear set up from the 64 'LL.

The BGB has slop in it from a wallered out key way. I'm getting a machinist to cut a new slot in it right now.

All the wiring was junk. I do have a correct set of headlight brackets to go on it.

A lot work to be sure...probably more than this old thing deserves. These 68-70 tractors seem to be the least common versions. For every 20 round hoods I see I only see one of these. I'll keep posting pictures as I go along. I have the next week off for fair and I expect to make a lot of progress.

Dave

Your a brave man Dave...best of luck on your projects. Looking forward to following your progress.

It should be an extraordinary sense of accomplishment when you are done.

Here's a run down of about 12 hours of work...

I butt welded a couple patches in the dash. One to fix a terrible rust spot, and another to patch a hole someone drilled for a switch. These repairs were then treated to a light coat of bondo.

I wire wheeled and sanded the frame and dash support.

The side covers were sanded.

I made a new grill for the hood out of expanded metal. The old one was homemade as well, but poorly done.

I clad welded the rock shaft to bring it back to the correct diameter...no pictures of this.

Still a lot to do before I spray primer. The hood and seat pan are the next projects.

Work continues....

I got the hood and seat pan prepped for primer. Had to do a little welding on the seat pan where it had cracked around the bracket. Pretty common problem on these tractors. I didn't bother making it look too pretty, as it won't be very visable with the seat installed. The hood had a couple of dents that I filled in with bondo.

Got primer sprayed on one side...will spray the other side Thursday. 20180911_134414.thumb.jpg.0d0692c5cbc63aa8cad9a5e5574c4cdb.jpg

Here is the money side painted.

Got back the bgb shafts from the machinist. Once I get some new seals and 1 new bearing I'll post putting that back together.

Haven't had much time to work on it lately...such is life.

The honeydoo projects keep slowing me down!

First picture is more parts cleaned up and primed.

Second picture is me destroying the stearing wheel with a torch. That thing was really stuck. I need to clean it up and weld the yoke on tonight.

Tonight I got most of the painting done.

I also got the steering shaft fixed up. I cut the yoke off the original gear box. Unfortunately some one in the past had tried to weld the nut for one of the gears onto the shaft with a stick welder and ruined the darn thing. The first picture is the yoke ready to weld on the shaft. The second picture is the completed job. Excuse my welding...I'm a long way from a pro!

This is the kinda project I likedOd. Gives one a great sense of accomplishment when in the end you fire it up and put it to work.

On a beater tractor like this I have found it best to forget how it was originally put together!

It's amazing how many things can be "fixed" the wrong way over the years...I plan on spending some time looking at the manual to figure out how it is supposed to be assembled.

Still waiting on the seals for the bgb, so I started putting some things back together. Got the hood back together. I don't have the original A/C logo for the grill, but I did have this old logo off a b10 I parted out years ago. Looks pretty snazzy.

Also got the rock shaft and the front end back together.

Should have the seals tomorrow....

Only got to work for a few hours this evening. Unfortunately the seals for the bgb won't be here till Thursday, so I decided to work on the steering.

The steering gears are out of a 64 LL, which of course were never installed in these late model tractors. Tonight I discovered that the 64 pitman arm was about 1.25" longer than the original gear box. You can see that in the first picture.

I drilled a new hole and cut the rod shorter. You can see that in the second picture. The only side effect of this modification is that the pitman arm has to be removed to remove the drag link. Not a big deal to me.

I also found a steering shaft bushing in my parts bin to replace the one that was on the tractor.

Got the BGB back together tonight. First picture show the new.keway I had machined in the input shaft.

The bearings looked ok, so I replaced the keys, and the seals. The "victor" brand seal on the PTO side was a lot thicker than the one I bought. I used the trick in the article below and it seems to have worked out just fine.

Sort of a hillbilly rebuild. Hopefully it holds for.a while. It feels nice and tight now at any rate.

Got a little bit accomplished this weekend. I bought another parts tractor for 25 bucks. It has a good transmission and a nice grill that came with it. Steering gear is ok, and it has two good tires. One of the rear tires and the lift rod is going on the current project.

Friday night I got the bgb and the transmission back together. No surprises...I found a rear lift in the parts stash. Just need to modify a lift rod to make it functional.

I spent Saturday afternoon getting a set of tires together. One rear off of the new parts tractor, and one that came on the tractor. I had a rough looking set front rims in the barn that I was able to clean up. I found a set of used boat trailer tires out at my cousin's farm to mount on them. Only had to buy one tube, and a half pint of white paint.

Got the tires on tonight.

Built a rear lift rod that I copied from my 3212h.

Put new rubber on the foot pads.

Installed the mid PTO after I changed the shaft and pulleys on it.

Painted the headlights and misc knobs.

Enough for one evening...
