Shuttle trans replacement

Recommended Posts

JohnA
I have a 7013S that needs a transmission. I would really like to do away with the shuttle drive as it has always given me problems (drive belt burning)(Simp.belts). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The seat deck is shorter on a shuttle trans than on a hydro and I doubt it if you can make it work over a hydro trans. I could not make it work anyway. I scrapped my shuttle trans, I would have shot it but I dont have a shotgun.

How many belts are you going through? I think you will have a hard time trying to find a "donar" tractor - but if you can would be what you want. As Al said there is a factory procedure that needs to be followed as far as the shuttle adjustments go but also as they get older you never know what you can run into. I wonder if the original engineers knew how long these things would last! The only other thing I can remember that needs to be checked is that the pullies will sometimes get a light coat of oil/grease from a slightly leaky seal - this must be cleaned off (Brake-Klean works well) before preforming any adjustments. And if I remember correctly the factory belt tension spec needs to be disregarded sometimes in order to get a full pull (probably something else is out of kilter for this to be though and it becomes a trial and error adj).

BTW - the "rickety" noise when using reverse is a characteristic of these shuttle tractors - nothing to be worried about unless it gets excessively loud and even then probably just leave it alone. If you don't need reverse than you could just install some straight pullies - just don't get stuck in a corner!

If Simplicity ever did make an 'Edsel' the shuttle drive sys. was their's! Right Les? BTW when the sqauking noise stops, then it's time to look for another trans sys. to put in,because you don't have any more Rev. left!As my friend Jeff said, just don't go anywhere where you might have to back up after that happens! dlc

You should be able to put a regular 3 speed in with little trouble. Which belt was burning? If it is the drive to the shuttle I suspect you have a bad front drive pulley. Many of these tractors have enough miles that the front pulley looks like a U from wear instead of a V that wedges and pulls harder with load. When it wears like this you are essentially driving the tractor with a flat belt the width of the inside of the V belt. If the bottom of your pulley V is shiny, its probably bad. The old starter gen pulleys "turned out of solid steel" are bad for this also. The aluminum flywheel pulleys wear like this also. The stamped steel pulleys from Delco are very hard and outlast the original machined pulleys many times over.
Back to the shuttle, The factory has a written procedure, [in the heavy frame tractor shop manual avail from your dealer, or contact me and we have them] that needs to be followed in sequence and a lot of shuttle problems go away. You can't just jump in in the middle and have it work well.
Also check your belt tightener arm [clutch] for slop in the linkage and alignment, and make sure it is free and not gummed up and keeping the belt from tightening. Good luck, Al

Thanks Al for your tips. I beleive you hit it right about the worn pulley and the grease. The pulley is shiny and the last time I pressure washed the trans area I smoked the drive belt the next time I ran it. I could have and probably did blow grease or slime onto the pulley. I'll keep my eye open for a three speed while I'm deciding wether to rebuild the shuttle unit. Thanks- J.A.

Sorry Jeff, I mistakenly thanked Al for the tip on the greasey pulley. I wondered if I could eliminate the planetaries (and of course reverse) because it seems like I smoke the belt most often when I'm maneuvering and doing alot of backing.

The housings look identical. The dealers could maybe answer this. Why couldn't you pull out the 4th gear and replace it with the reverse gears??
I do know that it does take some work to set up the shuttle (like when replacing belts) but when it is set up correct it works great. I own tractors with all 3 transmissions; for mowing especially with trees the shuttle is better than the 3 speed but not as good as a hydro.

Hey Jeff, don't spill the beans 'til Dave files the patent application!
And speaking of lots of speeds, my SunSpot has a hydro with a dual range axle. So if a hydro has an "infinite" number of speeds, does that mean that I have two times infinity?

Nice try Mike but the case is also made differently inside the standard 3 speed to accomodate a reverse gear and mounting pin assy - but you are right in that they do use many of the same parts. Keep thinking though - maybe we can come up with a dual range 13 speed hydro manual automatic push button! And if you can't I'm sure DLC can.....right DL?... :)

If I didn't know better I think the above 2 'posters' are...how is that said?...PULLING MY CHAIN! HA! Jeff you give me MUCH more credit than I deserve...and Fred if you double infinity..dosen't that make time as we know it--- STOP!!? E=mc2 or something. dlc
