prez 0 Posted April 20, 2002 still having problems with my starter after taking it back to the repair man and getting a good bill of health that was weeks ago. I have been trying to start it after putting new plugs in points con. ect cant get a good spark I had a expert come over and get it to start but his 25 years of working at a tractor dealer as a repair man barely helped (it took awhile he determined that the negitive side of the sol. was grounding out agaist the moter thus robing spark from points After taking out the moter a third time sol was lose from starter why does this keep happening this time I put lock tight on bolts not much thread? sorry for spelling but this happens when I get highly frustrated. powermax_paul 1 Posted April 20, 2002 Michael, It sounds like you have several problems happening at once. Let's take the ignition circuit first. The starter may or may not be actually grounding out. Regardless, these starters draw a lot of juice. If your battery is weak, the starter may be drawing enough juice that it's dragging down the voltage. It may be enough that the ignition coil primary side is not getting the voltage it needs to produce the voltage that's needed for spark at the secondary side of the coil. As for the starter, locktight is a good first step in keeping the mounting bolts tight, but do you also have split lockwashers on the mounting bolts? When you use locktite, use something like laquer thinner or acetone to clean the oil off bolts and internal threads and a compressed air blowgun so the locktight bonds well. Also, if you do have lockwashers, you may have hardened mounting screws like grade 8, which will sometimes slip on a lockwasher because their harder than the washer. You may want to switch to grade 5 or bright hex screwss. I don't understand what would be vibrating so much that it's working the solenoid screws loose. Also, make sure the starter is meshing correctly with the ring gear. These starters don't have a positive pilot as I remember, and the adjustment is rather arbitrary. If it isn't meshing properly, it could create vibration. Just some of my thoughts. Paul
Tuffy 1 Posted April 20, 2002 Yeah - it sounds like you don't have a battery with enough kick to meet the demand. You need at least 45 amp battery and more would be a good idea. I had one with a 40 amp and replaced it - turned over fine. Steve
