repower a Prestige

I have a Prestige I guess it is about a 2003 or so year with 300 plus hrs on it. It smokes pretty bad, and it seems to be the right cylinder. I am not going to spend 1800 for a new motor. An overhaul kit is around $400 so I am guessing another cheaper motor would fit. I can tinker some but not sure I want to tackle an overhaul. Any advice would be appreciated. The motor is a CV23s which is no longer available from what I can tell.

Cheapest way to repower is to find a lesser brand tractor using the same engine. The 23 I repowered my 06 prestige came out of a Lowes John Deere L something or other... 130 maybe? Had around 300 or so hours on it. Those tractors literally fall apart around the engine. Some of the Craftsman garden tractors use the same engine. I think Cub cadet also used them.

Best case scenario is to find one of those tractors stilll running so you can evaluate the engine. in its current tractor. Most of the time one of those whole tractors can be bought for under $500.  Sometimes you can sell some of the other tractor parts off to get the price down even more in the end.

Once you have the tractor and engine, you just put all the tractor related parts off your Prestige onto the engine and drop it in and go.

Know also, that the 23's are known to chug out smoke on startup when the tractor sits overnight or longer. After that initial charge of smoke it runs fine with no smoking. Mines run like that for 2+ years now. Never had to add oil between changes. There has been discussions in here on that subject.

The first few years I had it I assumed it was just start up some, but this year I realized that it is pretty serious. It uses a lot of oil, the right cylinder plug has fouled and it smokes other than start-up. I have looked for used tractors with similar engines but no luck so far.

I just brought home a pretty rough Prestige with a smoking 23 Command.  PO said he had the right side head off and replaced the gasket.  It runs but pops a little from that RH side.  650 hours;  his maintenance schedule was inconsistent.   Anyone else dig into one of the engines or is replacement imminent?

A donor tractor with a compatible engine may cost around  $500 but it will also have around 300 hours on the clock.  You already have one - - how's that working out?  I would rather see you spend the $500 on that rebuild kit and some books on small engine repair.  Make sure you get one (or two) that cover engines up to at least 20 HP.  Man, you'll learn so much and have so much fun - - not to mention the bragging rights.  You'll throw your arm out of joint patting yourself on the back.

are you guys saying that 300-600 hours is all you can expect from these engines? I never had an hour meter on one, but I'm sure the old flat head cast iron Briggs and K series Kohlers would roll 1,000 if maintained. Not even an oil filter.

Typically a Kohler Command or even a simple Briggs Intek Twin will exceed 1000 hours before any major issues besides a rocker cover leak. 2000 with good maintenance.

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
