Did you check resistance across the windings with it unplugged?

No , “I only know enough about electrical stuff

to be dangerous!”

How do I check that?

 Thanks

Should I have continuity across the plug?

If there’s 2 leads coming from the clutch, check the resistance between them.  Should be at least a few ohms.  Maybe someone here knows the spec.  Also check each lead to ground - that reading should be infinite.

If there’s only 1 lead, then measure the resistance to ground (other “lead” is already grounded).

I am not sure how that clutch is set up, but if it can be adjusted you might want to check the clearances on the clutch?  I have seen cleaned up connections and adjusted clearances make them work well again.  Just a thought.
