WOW!

Just got a 1989 service manual for the Simplicity Sunstars (Deutz-Allis 1900 series).
Total pages: 150.
With "Not for Reproduction" stamped across every.single.page, and obviously a photocopy of the original.
That is not the reason for the WOW! comment, however.
Pulled up the PDF file of the service manual for my 2010 Deere X540: 968 pages!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is the page difference because the Deere needs so much more service, or the writers are more verbose or just Simplicity?

I think it has more to do with the 21 years "advancements" in WBT (WhizBangTechnology) that has crept into the L&G world.
I quit working on cars because of all the computer crap on them.
I worked on tractor trailers and loved it; basic mechanics.
Then they moved me to the tractors: COMPUTERS!
So I moved over to a L&G service center. Was fine for a while, then: COMPUTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To tell the truth, I haven't really compared the two yet. I got the Sunstar manual because I put a "new" fuel gauge in and it would not work. It SEEMED like everything was right, but no go. So I ordered the manual.
Next time I fired the ol' girl up (before the manual came), the fuel gauge is working!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, that's the one. Only mine is in black & white; an obvious copy!

The Deere manual will cover the engine and transmission also where the Simplicity manuals cover the tractor only as their dealers were typically authorized dealers for the manufacturers of those components (Kohler, Eaton, Peerless, etc). Many Deere dealers do not have to be authorized dealers for these other lines because Deere handles the parts, service, and warranty for those components in-house as a part of the whole tractor.
