DaleC Posted July 10, 2019 Posted July 10, 2019 I have raised 8 acres of sweet corn several years with my B12 that i acquired in 2000. I also mowed about 4 acres. I personally have put over 3000 hours on this unit. I am losing power and it is using a massive amount of oil. I cannot find enough hard parts to do a major rebuild. Any ideas. Piston? Rings? Where to get.
kwt Posted July 10, 2019 Posted July 10, 2019 I THINK you can bore the cyl to 320000 specs. Those pistons are available.
wwbragg Posted July 10, 2019 Posted July 10, 2019 Small Engine Whse has an 11 HP conversion available for $626. Just another option.
LMichaels Posted July 10, 2019 Posted July 10, 2019 Why not just put a complete engine on it? When I had my B10 I was looking at rebuilding the original it would have cost me $250 MORE to rebuild the 10 than what a brand new 16 cost me. Best decision I made
Brettw Posted July 10, 2019 Posted July 10, 2019 Depending upon what level you want to take this, you can sometimes just hone and a new set of rings. That might get you a few more years of use. Rings, pistons, etc. are usually available on e-bay. Rings and gasket set about 40 bux.
RAC Posted July 10, 2019 Posted July 10, 2019 If it's got over 3,000 hours on it, it's past a hone and re ring. Before deciding what to do take it clear apart and check the other primary wear points. Especially the crank pin. Probably out of spec with those hours and will need reground. If an undersized rod isn't available then punt. Valve stem to guide clearance probably won't be in spec either. As long as the stems are ok the guide can be fixed.
kwt Posted July 10, 2019 Posted July 10, 2019 "Personally" ~ 3,000 hrs. An engine that is splash lubed and who knows how many hours before OP got it. Can a modern engine do that? I put a larger piston in a 320000 series that ran for about 40 years before the freeze plug came off the carb without me knowing it and trashed the bore. Big time dirt and grass in that area. Lapped the valves and used the original rod and cap. Works good.
Bill725 Posted July 11, 2019 Posted July 11, 2019 DaleC, FYI, the B&S 300421, 12HP CI engine has become an oddball. The reason is the 320000 series replaced the 300000 series engine. Also, the 10 and 16 HP continued in production and have been moved to China. The hardest parts to find are NLA oversized pistons, NLA undersized connecting rod and the NLA early intake valve. The standard piston is available and you could sleeve the cylinder or as mentioned above, others have bored for the 320000 series piston. The standard connecting rod is available and the crank could be welded and re-ground or a standard crank is available. An engine builder may have to determine what needs to be done in regards to the intake valve, grind or replace. Or, you could repower with a 10 or 16HP. 2
Chris727 Posted July 11, 2019 Posted July 11, 2019 @DaleC, You might be able to find a good used 16hp engine to swap into the tractor or possibly find a brand new 16hp. With those kinds of hours the bevel gear box, rear axle, and differential are likely getting pretty worn also. If thats the case it may not be worth putting a new engine into it.
MrSteele Posted July 15, 2019 Posted July 15, 2019 Pull a Joe for the rest of the season. When mine start using excessive oil, what may not be kosher to some works fine in my yard. You are using 30 wt oil? Go to 50 wt. If still using, add Lucas oil stabilizer, or run pure stabilizer. That got me through the rest of a season last year. I patched with a new set of rings when the BGB went out last fall. I regularly cut a couple acres, use the machine for towing trailers full of wood out of the woods for folks to haul to their house. Hardly a week goes by that I do not burn a couple tanks of gas
DaleC Posted July 18, 2019 Author Posted July 18, 2019 Thanks fellas. I have already purchased needed parts for gear box rebuild (bearings, seals, input shaft). I have an original 16 to go through, however I really want to save this mighty 12 if I can. I have had the differential apart twice for broken gears. Trans twice for broken tube axles. I intend to go through it completely. These are just some of what I have done. Kent's saying was "Keep it running and KEEP IT." 2

I have already purchased needed parts for gear box rebuild (bearings, seals, input shaft) The output shaft seal on the pulley side will require 2 of the new style seals. The original seal is 0.437 thick, the new seal is 0.25, if your BGB is similar to the Landlord, and I believe it is. And, just because, purchase a new woodruff key for the output bevel gear. Mine slid together easily on the old key, have to press the gear on the shaft with a new key. One of us has had a *** of a problem with what I thought was an overkill rebuild. I am working on Mama's table top right now, will get back to my Landlord later this week. I think most of my problem with adjusting gear mesh was the loose key. I have to pick up a used 16 HP that supposedly ran decent when pulled out of the tractor by a scrapper that assumed correctly that he could get more for the complete engine than sending it to a scrap yard. It will be for sale as soon as it is loaded into my car, hopefully in the next couple of weeks. PM if interested 1
LMichaels Posted July 20, 2019 Posted July 20, 2019 You will really enjoy that B series with a 16 single. With 32 CI it makes that tractor a real torque monster. My old B10 with the 16 could go through the thickest grass without an issue at nothing more than just over idle using 3rd speed to keep ground speed up. My neighbors used to be amazed how quietly I got through the lawn
