Hey guys,

my tractor needs a new brake pad, is this the “Brake Lining” on the parts diagram?

also, it seems that when the brake is loose, this could just slide out, as in, there’s nothing keeping it in place.

Man i missing something?

i haven’t had any issues, it just seems loose enough that it could.

Thanks for the help.

Welcome, Timmangan.  Yes, brake lining.  Many guys herein have used a leather strap or old belt and glued it on with JB Weld.  Someone also makes brake material tape rolls but I'm not sure where to find it.

Hello, McMaster carr sells brake lining by the foot in different widths and thicknesses.

You may try to take it all apart clean the lining and the metal and glue it back together  . I have used  E6000 glue

it is available at most hardware stores or walmart  in the craft section

Thanks Ken in Mi

I have glued brake material to the flat surface of the cone clutch pivot assembly but can you wrap it around a drum???

Hello, I wrap it around a 1 qt paint can ,and hold it in place with a hose clamp , that gives it curvature.

Then you can glue &clamp it to the brake  shoe.

Bla bla bla. Bla.

Again, how do guys wear out the brake on a hydrostatic tractor. There is a lever on the right. Forward for forward, towards the rear for reverse, and the stop in the middle stops the tractor. It is effectively a parking brake.

Umm, neutral on a hydro is NOT "effectively a parking brake".  Why would you even say that?  Neutral on a hydro just means no movement - there is nothing holding the machine mechanically still - engine running or not.

I agree - it is crazy to wear out a brake on a hydro tractor, but if you have a hill, you should set the brake whether the tractor is running or not.  I realize most of the time a hydro will just sit there, but again - there is nothing mechanically holding it there.

Before I rigged up some brake with an old belt, I would think a brake band for one of these tractors would be pretty easy to find as a good used part.

The BRAKE is effectively a parking brake. I didn't write that very well, obviously.

OK - the way it is worded I took it as you meaning the hydro lever and that being in neutral was like a parking brake.  All good then.
