timmangan Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 I’m looking at replacing the rims on my gthl17, just wondering what size the, not sure what it’s called, axle hole diameter is. I’m currently looking at some 16x6.5-8 with a 3/4” bore thank guys
PhanDad Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 I think your tractor is a "17-GTH-L", large frame tractor (there were small frames with a similar name). Although the front axle shaft is 3/4"; the wheel doesn't have a 3/4" bore. The OEM wheel uses a pair of Timken Set2 cone wheel bearing with matching cup. A common size used on boat trailers. I believe the wheel "axle hole" OD is about 1-3/4" for the bearing cups. OEM tire size is 16x6.50-8 as you state. I don't remember anyone on this site converting to a 3/4" "axle hole" wheel. There have been some conversions to a "wheel hub" and 4 bolt (I think) wheel.
GWGAllisfan Posted July 26, 2019 Posted July 26, 2019 Most newer better quality mower that use a 16x6.50x8 front tire use a wheel that at first glance would appear to be 3/4" bore, but it actually has two bushings in either end. They usually have a grease fitting on the axle, which might help keep the two bushings from wearing out the axle, if regularly and properly greased. They sell those all over, mounted with a tire, sometimes cheaper than a tire alone. It would take a few more washers or shims, but it should work, especially if you could rig up a grease cap like box store mowers use. I did buy a well modified 7117 once that had that style wheel on the front, and it had badly worn the underside of the spindle. Of course that one was for the electric lift and the rest for scrap, as it was obvious that it was suffering from way to long deferred maintenance. I considered one of those for one of my tractors but after considering all the issues I just decided to just buy a used roller bearing one. While I was looking at it, I think I found the bushing has the same OD as the outer race of our wheel bearings, or maybe it was the spindle ball bearings, anyway it was food for thought. I never found new 8" wheels for a 16x6.5x8 itre with a 3/4" bore. I think I found some 1" ones, maybe on deere.... Just some musings....
