Seized the B&S 1450 engine ( model: 204412, Type: 0529-E9, Code: 070813YD) on my Troybilt chipper-shredder today. Ran the gas out of the carb late last fall and put it away with the intention of doing some carb work and a complete unit service this spring. Got the unit out this afternoon.  Fired right up...then started bogging down and stopped with strange clunking noises.  You guessed it...it was out of oil!  Don't remember draining it last fall but, obviously I did.  You'd think a 70 year old guy would know better than to make such a stupid rookie mistake as not checking the oil level before starting. (Senior moment??!)  Anyway, she's stuck pretty good...can just barely turn the engine over using two hands on the 12 " impeller attached to the drive shaft.  Obviously the bearings and crankshaft are shot...probably the piston, rings and sleeve liner too. Question:  is it better to rebuild this unit or get a new engine?   I'm pretty handy with tools but I've got to be honest I've never done a complete small engine overhaul. What's our guy's experience and opinion?

It isn't that much of a job, especially today with the internet to find information and parts. The biggest consideration is parts availability, time, and cost. vs. a replacement engine.

My first engine job was replacing a burnt piston and rings when I was maybe 13. didn't know the piston went in one way only. It had an arrow on it as big as day! It lasted about half an hour, maybe.

But it's a learning experience and pretty satisfying. when it starts and runs.

Now I've been in all sorts of engines from one to eight cylinders.

You may have lucked up. Hopefully, the rod did not ruin the crankshaft throw. Aluminum can be carefully removed from the crankshaft. A new rod might be all you are looking at, other than a set of rings. I never reuse rings once a piston is removed from a bore for any reason. If you shut it down before the rod disintegrated and tore a hole in the block as it exited. rod, rings, gaskets are a lot cheaper than a new engine. Tear it down, before making any decision
