Mowing height dilemma

Recommended Posts

During the spring and summer, it is best to cut your grass between 2-1/2 to 3" long. The longer grass blade allows the plant to store energy to weather the hot and dry periods. The longer blades also shade the ground retaining moisture and preventing weeds from growing. I have a Sovereign and I set my mower deck at 2-1/2" high during the spring and summer. The 2-1/2" mowing height allows the deck to float both up and down where at 3" it does not. Then starting September 1, I lower the mowing height to 2-1/4" by turning the 3/8-16NC (16 threads per inch) adjusting screw down (4) turns. The following mowing I lower the mowing height to 2" by turning the adjusting screw another (4) turns. It is best to cut your grass at 2" in fall to prevent snow mold. A 2-1/2 x 2 angle iron works nice as a mowing height gage.

I always thought that optimal mowing height was 2.5 to 3 inches. I read today that for perennial rye/fescue/bluegrass, the optimal height is 1.5 to 2 inches. They said any higher than that doesn't produce as good a turf. Any experts out there to shed light on this?
