B-112 Variable Drive

Sounds like the 3 holes in the variable pulley are worn. Had that same problem while back with my 3112V when the holes became egg shaped. New pulleys are still available from Simplicity dealer.

Check the pin holes, as mentioned. Be aware, though, that some noise is common on the variable drives. The pulleys are in separate pieces, and if they aren't almost perfectly clean and smooth, the belt will "grab" just enough to make them rattle when not under load. Also, the belt sometimes slaps the long flat belt stop on top... A good, simple system when they're not too badly worn. Get a lot of wear on them, though, and they can be a pain in the butt to keep quiet and adjusted to operate properly... Sure beats a standard 3-speed for mowing, though!

When idling in neutral, there is a clattering noise coming from the variable drive. I haven't shaken it down yet, but us this at all normal?
