Kohler command 20 smoking - where do I start

I have a beat up Sunstar with Kohler Command 20 and about 1400 hours.  It always made an occasional puff of smoke when i worked it hard on high grass but yesterday it started smoking a lot.

Where do I start ?  Most likely culprit rings or valves ?

My mechanical skills are an inch deep and a mile wide.  Have not seen the inside of a small engine since shop class in 1974

I'm thinking a compression test and then oil in the cylinders to see if it's valves or rings ?   Am i on the right track ?

thanks

From what I've learned on this site, I'd check breather first.

If I got it right, a broken/plugged breather can cause heavy smoke.  Hopefully an engine guru will confirm.

I  got some time to  check it out- compression about 110 on both sides.

Squirted oil in cylinders and it went to 150 on both sides.

So it's not looking good.

How hard is a ring job on this engine ?
