BillC 0 Posted May 13, 2002 I would guess the bolts are worn due to lack of lubrication (grease). I have a 1962 model 725 with many hours and the differential has not been touched. According the parts manual the (8) bolts are 5/16-18 X 2-1/2 long with locknuts, torqued to 23-27 ft-lbs. I would also guess they are steel. You can tell what grade of bolt it is by the markings on the bolt head. I would suggest replacing with the same grade of bolts and lubricate the differential often, spring, mid-summer and fall, if used for winter use.
Bufford 0 Posted May 13, 2002 I have a Landlord 2110 with a bad differential. I found that the bolts that hold the pinion gears are very worn and have some serious problems in the thread. They look like they are stainless, but maybe not. Has anyone ever replaced these bolts with standard grade 5 or grade 8 bolts? Looking at the diff, they shouldnt have major wear issues. thanks
BillC 0 Posted May 14, 2002 On my 725 there is a grease fitting on the axle tube located just to the inside of the differential.
HubbardRA 20 Posted May 14, 2002 I would use grade 8 bolts from any good hardware store. I lube my diff with the wheel bearing grease that I use on the bearing buddies of my trailer. Rod H.
MPH 12 Posted May 14, 2002 Bill: I have a 1960 700. How do you lubricate the diff? What do you use? Thanks, Peter
