Collector Box Vent Size?

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of finishing up a custom grass/leaf collection trailer that's fed by an EZ Rake vac/blower that's mounted on the back of my Prestige. The trailer is approx. 4'x4'x4' and it's made out of 1/2" plywood. The debris will be  blown into the top of th box by a 6" diameter hose. I'm plannning to use 1/2" hardware cloth for the vent area but I'm not sure how big to make the vent area. Any suggestion?

I have never seen how a vacuum collector cart in constructed, but I have seen drop boxes designed to drop sand and shot from ventilation systems. The blower is designed to create sufficient velocity to transport the debris to the drop box without falling out of the stream of air. Drop boxes are designed with a deflector between the intake and exhaust, to force the stream of air to go around so it does not short circuit between intake and exhaust. The exhaust is designed larger than the intake in area to decrease the air velocity to allow the debris to fall out of the stream of air.

Understanding this, I think I would put the intake high in the front with a vertical deflector plate (let gravity work for you) and the exhaust high out the back. You may have to play with the length of the deflector plate and the exhaust area.

The top of the PECO collector where all air exhausts is about 2 foot square.  (I think the airflow is less than the rear mounted blower)

As stated above, there’s an inlet deflector to force the air with debris downward.

Trial run today and it worked pretty well. I may have to get a longer discharge hose from the blower to the cart. Does corrugated drainage tile work very well or will it clog?
