ARK 540 PTO adapter and Danco-like pull-type mower

I've had a couple of these fairly scarce ARK 540 adapters over the years, and even recently thought about selling this last one I have.  I always wanted to use one for something, but couldn't track down a suitable implement.  Andrew had shared a 540 pto setup he created for rear implement use, and it got me thinking of my 540 adapter again.  I happened to look on facebook marketplace in time to miss what I thought was a pull-type 48" Danco 540rpm unit in Ohio.

I kept watching...and low and behold one popped up locally this past weekend.  As luck would have it, the seller lived on my street.

I had to grind down the 7/8" pins on my 20" drawbar, to fit the Cat0 arms, but attaching the mower this way keeps the hitch and driveshaft pivots aligned for proper angling.  The mower works great, runs smooth and tows easily.

Strange thing about this mower is the similarity to a Danco, but “Independent Manufacturing Co” tag and “IMCO” stenciling on the sheetmetal.

IMCO made a bunch of implements in the ‘70’s, but they must have purchased some Danco components (or vice versa) I am thinking.

Don't the IMCO wheels drag terribly when turning?

Drag?  Im not sure I understand.  They roll...like any trailer wheel.

Dave; it's a trailing mower; not a mounted 3pt. mower. Josh; what keeps the front of the deck up? Are the attaching arms solid mount at the deck? Little hard to be sure from the pics but I guess there would be no other option.

They don't look like they pivot. But I thought it was attached to the tractor at the 3-point mount, and Dave corrected me. I see now.

Yes, the “tounge” of the mower is fixed at the deck, and I am using a drawbar on my 3pt hitch to serve 2 purposes.  First, it does raise and lower the leading edge of the mower (roughly 8“), and second, it aligns the pivot point of the hitch and pto u joint for best turning capability.  Since that 540 adapter moves the pto output shaft back aprox 12”, I needed to move my hitch point back also.  The end of the 3pt arms are perfectly position.

COOL!
But I'm confused: why you have the PTO shield tied so it can't rotate with the shaft?

I dont know why he has it tied, but I'm almost ashamed to admit it...... but....I did actually read the instructions that came with my new pto shaft for my bush hog.o.O

The instructions with it did say to tie it off like that. I'm afraid I just didnt get any more curious than that.

with the newer style plastic covers on the pto shafts they have a greasable poly bushing on the ends and want the shield tied so it is staitionary and less likeley for clothing  to catch on therefore less likley to cause injury.

But the plastic shields are made to slip if you get into them.  We've had them on equipment for years and never tied them.
