7116 rear end leak

This has been a slight issue since I owned the tractor, and I just kept it on cardboard and topped the fluid off.  This spring though the whole rear end decided to dump all it's fluid (ATF-F) in a few days between uses.  I'm finally getting ready to trace the issue down.

I used brake cleaner to spray down the offending area to try and pinpoint the leak, and now it appears that it is coming from between the two halves right below the right side drain port.  I assume that this is an easy fix, parts wise, but probably entails stripping the whole rear end down?

Is there another common area that I may be missing before I rip the rear end of this tractor out?

On the other hand, I do have a complete rear end, BGB back, from a 916.  They aren't exactly the same as my 7116 has the hydro filter on the side and the other one has it on the bottom.  Beyond that, are they a bolt in swap?

They are perfect swap, the side filer is a later unit.  If you use a rototiller or revitalizer you will need a fixed pulley  to guide the tiller drive belt so it does not rub on the side filter.   Some people who  just use the tiller occasionally clamp a piece of tin or a tin can over the filter to protect it.

Hello, I Had a leak back there , a short piece of hose connects the 2 sides  I think a low pressure return line . A new hose and some clamps fixed it .

The leak seems to be centralized around that hose, and I've suspected it in the past.  It's tough to tell with the texture of the paint as it kind of tends to wick the fluid around a bit.  I may replace that hose and refill it a bit.  The leak was enough that it will show back up a after an hour or so of sitting, so it won't take long to know if I fixed it.  May even replace the little spring clips on the hose with clamps and see what I get.  Worst case,  I lose a bit more ATF-F.

Good to know about the rear end.  Nice security knowing I have that there for the 7116 or 7122, as well as another spare BGB.  I do till with that one and need to get the pulley fabbed up to keep it off the filter.  I actually wouldn't mind the bottom filter just for that reason.

Hello, , here are some photos of the remote filter with hoses.  the other stuff is cone clutch missing the cone with lining part,  and hydro fan with pulley

Thanks Ken in Mi

  • 1 month later...

Just to report back, I replaced the spring clips on that large hose with proper stainless steel worm drive hose clamps and the leak stopped.

I wish I had done that on my gas tank.  Used the Briggs spring clamp, hose popped off and I lost a gallon of gas onto the ground wah
