Simple Sisters

I pulled out my 3 "Simple Sisters" today.  1974 Baron 3414S, 1973 Sovereign 3415H, 1972 Landlord 3410H.  The Baron was last run 2 years ago, the Sovereign about 12 years ago, and the Landlord ???  Could not get spark (working at it for several hours) on the Baron or Sovereign.  I could not find spark or compression or much else in the Landlord. sm00

Both tractors have about 4.3 ohms across the secondary on the magneto.  My HB212 which has good spark has 7.8.  The Briggs manual does not have any info...what should I have on the Magneto secondary?

I purchased 2 of the NOVA II units.  Installed one in the 3414S Baron and it fired right up! sm01

Then snow was predicted and I had lots to get done before it hit, so I decided to put the 3415H away for now and tackle it later.

The fourth sister which I turned into an Allis pulling tractor and sold a few years ago, was a 1971 3314V.  So I had all the early 70s tractors.

Curious - did you pull with the variable system, or remove it?

I pulled with the variable, was very successful.  We tried a few pulls with straight pulleys, and went back to the variable.  I did some fine tuning adjustments to the variable and with a good belt it worked good.  I was able to get more range.  We had a 32ci "warmed up" Briggs and we could end the pull with the front end in the air and the back tires spinning in the dirt with no belt slippage.

At the time our other pulling tractor was a 917 with a 20hp magnum.  I tried the variable with the 20hp and it slipped the belt at the end of the pull, so it could not handle that hp.
