Transmission jumping out of second

AC716

Recommended Posts

My AC 716 started jumping out of second. It stays in as long as the engine is putting pressure on the gearing. Ie pulling up hill it stays in. going downhill it jumps out. In high or low range. Only second. Any ideas?

See attached typical Simplicity / Allis-Chalmers manual transmission IPL.

1) The shifter forks slide on shafts, L & M. The shafts are located and held in place in the transmission case by (2) setscrews, P,  located on the top of the trans. Check to make sure a setscrew has not backed out and a shifter shaft have not moved. The end of the shifter shaft should be flush to the LH side of the case. The 2nd-reverse shifter fork and shaft should be to the rear.

If that is not it then:

2) There is a detent ball , S, and spring, R,  in each of the shifter forks. I am guessing the spring is broke on the 2nd-reverse fork. Check by moving the shifter between neutral and 2nd and reverse. Does the fork lock into 2nd and reverse. If not I suspect the detent spring is broke. To repair, requires splitting the transmission.

I already knew all of this, I'm so bright.  I was just waiting to see if someone else was as knowledgeable as I like to believe I am.  &:)  I'm telling you, if you can't find 10 bux in your wallet to get the best source of real honest to goodness useful information, you really are broke.  Been here going on 13 years, and it never ceases to amaze me at the incredible wealth of knowledge, and the readiness of so many to share it simply for the asking.  What a truly wonderful group of people.

And, if this is the case, while you have the transmission apart, it is a great time to replace those leaky seals you have been cussing for the last ten years, also a fine time to replace bearings, just because. And, while you are inside, check condition of all keys and either bearings or bushings on the axle tubes, consider upgrading the bushings to bearings, see how much you can spend and justify while it is apart. Or, pull a Joe (me), and do everything you can think of to repair or replace what might be your next problem, even go to overkill to be certain that your next problem will be something besides that transmission.

Oh, the case is apart and you are waiting on parts. A great time to rework the differential and repack bearings, check bushings. The parts for the tranny came in, but the differential parts are not here yet. Well, let's check the drive shaft, consider that alignment you have been considering. A little cleaning and touch up painting is always in order. Heck, the dash is almost apart, new choke and/or throttle cables, new wiring, oh what a list you can come up with!:D:D:D
