Hello everyone. Got a question. Have a Allis Chalmers tiller serial# 0963968 is that the same as Simplicity #169039 tiller for tine bearings, locking collar, and the two chains in the case? Thanks ahead for all the info!!!!!  Doug

Unfortunately serial numbers don't help.  Model numbers (MFG#) can be cross referenced.

Post some pics of your tiller, that would help us identify it for sure.  Some earlier models had a single reduction chain system.  A MFG #169039 looks like this:

SovTiller_0024.jpg.7f95fd0e12271a3b025283f98434da6b.jpg

The later style single reduction tiller looks like this:

Note the gearcase difference.

There are "roundtop" tillers also.  And models with built in clutches.

Over the years, I've seen different style tillers attached to various tractors, not all "OEM" configurations.

If your tiller has the double reduction gearcase, I believe the gearcase has the same parts as the #169039 tiller.  Others should confirm.

The AC “serial number” of that era consisted of the last 3 digits of the model #, followed by the actual serial.

your 096XXXX is AC model number 1600096. This tiller is equivalent to Simplicity #1690039.  However, the lift rod on the tiller drive may be the larger diameter 1-1/8” and the lower hitch the wider version, for Allis 300/400.  I would have to look closer to see for sure.

To answer your question, yes the components you are wondering about are a match.

Does the same logic apply to AC built Hommies?

So my T-12 is MFG# 1600203 and Serial #40001.

Bill, no as I understand it, the T-12 is MFG# 1600112.  I am not sure why it does nto follow the 1600XXX sequence that other models and attahcments do.  In my searching I have found that even though there appears to be a very short duration of T-12's built, and no differences, there is a '3' series and a '4' series.  Yours appears to be the 1st machine built of the 4 series.  The highest 3 series serial number I have seen is 28.

I beleive I have said this before, should you ever be moved to send that T-12 down the road, please, please, let me know!

My T-16H is 1600285, and the tag shows 285 as well.

I would think they would be expensive these days through Simplicity.

From the Timken Farm Interchange Catalog:

The bearings listed above are the whole bearing unit.

For #105309, GRA102RRB is the 1-1/8" bearing only (greaseable) and the Collar is S1102K

For #1669337, RA012RRB is the 3/4" bearing only (non-greaseable) and the Collar is S1012K

I’d like to hear from someone that has experience with these types of bearings.

With the main one shown above with the cast housing, from literature, it sounds like you can replace the bearing relatively easily. There are spaces in the spherical edge that allows the bearing to be removed when it’s rotated 90 degrees from its normal position.

I’m not sure if the other bearing can be as easily replaced since the flange is steel.

Good Morning everyone. Have  #1690039. Bearing retainers for tine drive are bolted in. Guessing nuts are turning on inside of case. What would be the efficient way of removing the retainers to remove bearings an open case?  Have some ideas, but thought i would ask everybody first. Previous post was wrong tiller model number so I deleted it.

See @Bill725's advice below.

Here's the correct Figure from the Tiller Repair manual (a bit clearer since it's from an electronic copy):

@PhanDad happen to post a non 1690039 assembly. Below is one from the Simplicity Repair Manual, Tractor Mounted Tillers (All Models through 1978). Shows item 30 nut on the inside of the case. Unfortunately, you will have to split the case.

I have also included an IPL of the late model tiller which has bolts welded to the reinforcing plate which come thru the case with nuts on the outside.

I have replaced only the bearing.  They are on the shelf at tractor supply, $23/ea here.

Good Morning all. Well getting ready to split the case. Right side down. Any surprises should I expect? Thinking replacing the chains since I got it open. Is that pretty straight forward?  Thanks in advance again. Enjoy the weekend!!!!!!
