AC720...backfiring

Hey guys...I've been trying to get the old AC720 back on the road, but am having trouble.

By the way...thanks for all the good advice you all have given me.  I would have liked to reply to each of you individually, but do not see an option to do that.  If there is one, will someone please tell me how to do that?

I tried to adjust the points yesterday with no luck...here's what I did.  Where did I go wrong?

I rotated the engine until I got to the spot in the picture.  I'm assuming that little mark means I'm on top dead center.  Then I loosened all the screws on the points, including the one where the condenser connects.  Then I pushed the points open and put a .020 feeler gauge in them and then tightened all the screws.  When I pulled the feeler gauge out, the points snapped shut.

What am I doing wrong?  How do I get the points set to .020?  Also I don't see any other marks on the flywheel, so I don't know how I'm going to set the timing.  I think it's supposed to be set on 24 degrees before top dead center.

Hope you guys can get me straightened out.

Thanks.

Chuck been a while but just looking at you picture believe your on the wrong mark, believe it's the long mark at top of your picture

I'm thinking I rolled mine past the mark so pushrod for points is down and set them there, at that point they will be closed and when they open should be rite.  These pushrods tend to wear over the years so it may not be opening points far enough.

Right, turn engine until points open to the fullest and if you turn it further they will start to close. That's where you set them. TDC doesn't matter but the point where the points are open the furthest does.

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
