I was given an axle and wheels for free. So, I have been watching auctions and Market Place for used steel. Last week at an online farm auction I bought a set of used finger harrows along with some other steel bits and pieces and a trailer tongue jack. Total cost was $38 including tax and buyers premium. Separated out the steel I could use and shipped the rest to the recycler's. 320 lbs. of steel brought $48 even. Today I picked up a hitch and an axle mounting kit at Princess Auto. This afternoon I laid out my materials on the driveway and decided how I would build a two bike motorcycle trailer from the supplies at hand. I started by removing the bracing from the longer pieces of 1 1/2 in. tubing and straightening two that needed it in my press. Pics show what I accomplished this afternoon and also a couple of hours after supper. More to follow as the build proceeds.

You don't allow enough time between projects to bask in "completion satisfaction" (and drink beer).

And possibly run out of projects???

Yesterday I made some room in the shop and got my "A" frame and chain falls out to use. I added more cross members to the frame and some bracing for the tongue. With the chain falls I could turn the frame all directions to weld all the steel together on all sides of the joints. I took apart the old spring hangers and pivots and set the axle on the frame. Today I need to pick up new spring eye bushings and new u bolts and plates to mount the springs to the axle. Also a can of paint and see about lights and what I will do about fenders. I will start checking Market Place and Kijiji for angle iron to make the motorcycle tracks and also expanded metal to make a walk on deck beside the tracks.

What are you using for a welder? I have a Lotos that will do stick, tig and plasma cutting and a Millermatic 210 MIG machine with a Spoolmate 3035 spool gun for stainless and aluminum. I use argon with aluminum, tri-mix for stainless and straight CO2 for steel. Some guys use 75/25 for steel as it gives a nicer appearance.

Don't have any of the fancy welders. I only work with mild steel so My old Hobart 225 amp AC machine does all my welding.

Picked up the new u bolts and plates and the spring bushings this morning. Installed them this afternoon and also the wiring junction box and the safety chains.

Lloyd; I don't expect them to ever close. They keep adding stores. And yes; they are a great store. Just to tease you, here are two pictures of their this years catalogue; cover and index page. You can also see it all on line at princessauto.com

Painted all of the frame I could reach yesterday. Tomorrow I will flip it over and paint the rest. Lights I want go on sale on Tuesday at Princess Auto so I will pick them up at that time. Also will look at fenders but may make my own if I can find the steel for a good price.

Not happy with the lights I bought so they will go back and I will get something different. Bolted on 6 pieces of "E" track for my tie down points. Drilled the frame for the "penny" clearance lights and the wiring access for the clearance lights. Ran the wires and installed the grommets in the frame and also the clearance lights. Soldered all wires and used heat shrink then used a larger heat shrink with the glue inside over the first joints. Installed support for the wiring across the frame tube. Added extra supports so I can run the tail/turn wiring as well. Next job will be to add ends to the wires and connect everything up in the junction box.

Designed and fabricated fender supports; did the welding; cut off the sharp corners where needed; drilled the fenders and test fitted everything; drilled holes for light mounting. Now that everything fits like I want I will remove lights and fenders to paint all bare metal. I also acquired two chocks to put at the front end of the rails to hold bikes secure while hooking up the tie down straps. Now I need to source metal to make the rails and decide what to use for a walk on deck between the rails. Project progressing nicely and should be done soon.

Yesterday I picked up my rails that the welding shop down the road bent up for me from 1/8 checker plate. I set them and the chocks on the frame to see how they would look. Going to be just as I thought they would. Removed the rails and the fenders. Painted the fender brackets; tops of the fenders and the underside of the rails.

This morning I went for a breakfast ride with some of the guys from my Vintage Motorcycle Group. When I got home I cut my grass and then went to the shop to paint the top side of the rails and the bottom side of the fenders. Hopefully I will make some more progress tomorrow.

I reinstalled the painted fenders and the lights. I sprayed the undersides of the fenders with asphalt sealer to help prevent stone chips and then installed the wheels. I completed the wiring and hooked everything up at the junction box. Added the 4 way plug on the other end of the main wire from the junction box. Connected a battery and tested all the lights. The little 1 in. clearance lights are surprisingly bright. Reinstalled the safety chains. Set the rails and chocks on the frame. The left rail is bolted down and fully installed. Still have to bolt the right rail and chock to the frame. When that is done I will paint all the exposed bolts to prevent rust. Still have to pick up some 5/4 ths. deck boards to install between and beside the rails. Almost done; which is a good thing as wife wants the motorcycles and the lawn mower out of her garage. She keeps mumbling about her car getting hot outside in the sun..wah.. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now.

Today I bolted down the right rail and chock. Painted the chocks and all exposed bolt heads and nuts and threads. Installed 5/4 deck lumber beside and between the rails. Put a 1 X 4 board in the centre over the junction box so it doesn't get stepped on by accident. Painted nuts and threads of the board fasteners. Still have to measure for a ramp and have the shop down the road bend one for me. Otherwise it is DONE.

Stephen; I have 3 pieces of 4in. X 4in. heavy steel tube 24 ft. long. I also have 2 new 3500 lb. axles with hydraulic brakes.I bought a surge brake master cylinder at an auction and 4 new tires and rims from Princess Auto when they were last on sale. I also bought a 1000 lb. pickup crane to  mount on the front corner.  Later this summer or into the fall this stuff will come together into a 14 ft. float to haul my Allis CA. and anything else I want to move.

Great work as usual.

Was it difficult to get a plate for it (burdensome paperwork, inspections, etc)?

Bill; here in Ontario with a home built trailer you just go to the MOT office. Tell them you built a trailer. They want to know colour; axle capacity and type (utility, motorcycle, camper etc.) They fill out a form that you sign attesting to being the builder, pay a one time fee and you get a plate and ownership. On the paperwork is a registration number you can (should) stamp onto the trailer somewhere. Ten minutes in and out...dOd

You are doing a nice job on that trailer Dave. I have to re-do the wiring on mine. In New Brunswick any trailers under 1400 KG does not need a safety .

keep up the good work!

Hello Dave

Did you spray paint the trailer or by brush. Can I ask you what kind of paint sprayer you have? I have a HVLP Earlex sprayer . The only time I used it was to stain the wooden racks I made out of Ash for it. I hope to use it a lot more as I want to re-paint the whole trailer. I originally used tremclad paint. I saw a tractor that a chap painted with enamel paint using his Earlex and it turned out nice. The floor I made out of was Juniper which is a very tough wood. They use to use a lot of it in horse stalls, because of it's long wearing.

keepup the good work
