Need to replace the ignition switch on a 7116.

Is a certain one required or are they all pretty much universal?

Thanks, Dave

This would get more views (and therefore more likely a reply) in the "Talking Tractors" forum. Good luck, Dave

I think they're universal, you're talking about the 5-pin switch, right? I have a handful of them in the bucket. Message me your address and I'll drop one in the mail.

If you get one from a Briggs powered 3400, 7000, or 7100 series the tabs "probably" will be the same. However, in general there aree a variety of 5 tab magneto ignition variants.

The battery ignition switches from a kohler powered tractor are also 5 pin. Put one of those in place of a briggs 5 pin and you will likely be cooking something in the wiring harness..

Some of the older key switches, both Briggs magneto ignition and Kohler battery ignition,  have the function letter stamped on either the tabs themselves, or into the plastic next to the tabs. Newer ones have no markings. Easy to get the newer ones mixed up.

Best insurance when using used switches is to use a multi meter to see which tabs connect to the others when the key is in the different positions....that and really understand the wiring schematics of the tractor you are working on.

Be careful , electrical fires are no fun at all.....waaay too much excitement

Such as the magneto coil:

The above happened after the PO replaced the ignition switch in a 3416H and gave up on fixing the tractor.  Result for me was a great buy on a tractor with a replacement Briggs engine and a good Vickers hydro.

Great advice.

The pin with the red clip on it is the "mag kill" terminal for old Briggs cast single cylinder engines:

It matches this wiring diagram:

Here is a Kohler battery ignition keyswitch that is function marked on the keyswitch....

S = Start  ...goes to the starter solenoid  tab....usually routed through all the safety switches

B = Battery ... goes through a  breaker or a fuse to  a battery source, usually on the hot side of the starter solenoid

I = Ignition .... goes to the "+ " tab on the 12v coil

R = Regulator/Rectifier... goes to 12v terminal on the Kohler regualtor/rectifier ( center pin on the inline arrangements)

A = Accessory .... powers the lights,  power lifts etc . , usually powers 6 tab a junction board that in turn powers the other items

large.DSCN2645.JPG.6b9bf151fd7a110e5449c

On this one  in the run position B, A, I, and R are connected. In the start position B,  I, and S are connected. In the off position, none are connected.

I dont hve any Briggs /magneto ignition switches here right now (that I know of),  or I would post a photo of that too.

However Bill has the diagram posted above that shows the fuctions on a switch typical for the 7100 series and such with Briggs engines.

On those ..

S = Start...goes to the starter solenoid  tab....usually routed through all the safety switches

B = Battery... goes through a  breaker or a fuse to  a battery source, usually on the hot side of the starter solenoid

M = Magneto..goes to the kill wire on the engine

G = Ground...usually self grounded to the switch body, but tab can be attached to other ground points

L = Load... powers the lights,  power lifts etc . , usually powers 6 tab a junction board that in turn powers the other items

As I said before, I have run into a number of other magneto type switch 5 pin arrangements. Never assume they are all the same.

There are also 5 pin magneto switches that are 4 functions/keypositions rather than 3. usually the added key position is for running headlights without using a independent toggle switch for the lights.  In this case you have two "run" positions, one with lights on, and one with lights off.

And a pic of the newer "Briggs" (magneto) ignition switch used in the last Sovereigns with Kohler Command and Triad engines:

Note the different terminal layout.

Don't forget the new lovely 6 pin mystery switch they've come out with that we had to figure out on my loader project if I remember correctly. (1920 Ultima)

For completeness, here's the info.

The above plastic "Briggs" style switch shown 2 posts above (Command &Triad) is part #1686637 and has been superseded to part #1686734SM (the "mystery" switch).

The instructions (provided by @hurleyii) are confusing IMO:

6127e2471016a_IgnitionSwitch1686734Install.thumb.jpg.8f1a87ca595303f1c43a0441677e19eb.jpg

A careful read of the instructions is required:  The pinout figure2, is NOT for the switch, but for switch #1718305.  The mirror image of the pinout for the superseded switch part #1686734SM  is shown in figure 4, and it is the same as Sovereign Command and Triad tractors plus the sixth terminal (A).

For those of you curious about the replacement switch "A" terminal:

Switch part #1716061 has been superseded to #1686734.  The wire connected to the "A" terminal runs only to the alternator pin of the engine wiring harness.  The wiring diagram is from a Prestige MFG#1694015/6/7.
