Simplicity 6211 crank pulley removal

Recommended Posts

I need to replace the oil seal on the bottom of the Briggs model 253707 on my Simplicity 6211.  I've got the center bolt from the lower pulley and the three bolts at the top removed.  I assume the pulley shaft is keyed onto the crankshaft (at the small rectangular indentation at the top of the pulley shaft?).  I've hit down on the lower pulley a few times with a hammer, but nothing moved.  It's not a very hefty pulley;  before I get too aggressive with the hammer, is there a better way to remove the pulley assembly?  Was thinking of heating it up with Mapp torch.

Decided not to wait, and went the mapp torch route.  Heated up the pulley shaft at the top.  Multiple moderate taps with a hammer, and got the shaft off.  Now on to replace oil seal.

Had that not worked, sometimes a bearing separator can be used in these applications. You can limit the damage to the pulley by adding spacers between the separator and the flat portion of the sheave.
