Engine ID?

Recommended Posts

1972 Sears SS-15 Suburban, has the starter/generator system.
The only Identifier on the engine is a BS on the shroud, no model, serial, type numbers stamped anywhere that I can find.
Also, no numbers stamped on the carb. I'm needing a carb kit.

And on the light-hearted side, when the muffler blows the hot exhaust straight down on the front tire and you want to divert it:

Your numbers may be blocked by the starter/generator.  15 & 16 horse will be a 32XXXX block.

From a parts list, model 325432. But B&S does not recognize that model # in their parts lookup.

Engine is about same age as the 12HP Briggs in my Homelite T-12.  On that engine the engine info is on the side of the tin, under the carb (not on top as many are):

Thanks, guys!
Absolutely NO numbers on the cowl; I wiped it clean and looked it over good.
BUT, that does not mean they aren't there. I had looked and looked and looked on my 1928 Caterpillar for its serial #. Could not find it.
Then, the week I sold it, looked again, and there it was, bigger than life, NOT under any gunk, but shining in all its stamped-in-the-yellow-paint glory, right where I would have bet a case of Jack Daniels that I had looked before!!

Did you check the carb side?

Yes. The engine is in the tractor so there are some places that are hard to see. Wiped all the greasy dirt off, used a flashlight, cannot see ANY numbers stamped.
There is what appears to be a place where a sticker had been, but back then they were all stamped, to my knowledge.

Being a Sears, it would have been branded Sears, but the numbers of my brand new almost in the box  Sears 243431 engine that has never had oil in it, has the numbers stamped in the top, near the head, almost on the edge of the tin

Agree, the # can be an elusive sucker. So far,  I have 3 different engines with top, front and back model #'s. If rusty, sometimes bead blasting needed to see #

I do not necessary go by the model number stamped on the blower housing. I have purchased engines and have rebuilt and assembled engines without the correct blower housing. I go by physical characteristics. Such as:

The 24 CI engine has a 3-1/16" standard bore, includes 10 HP Model 2434XX.

The 30 CI engines have a 3-7/16" standard bore, includes 12 HP Models 30042X, with PTO & mag side balancers & Model 30143X and 13 HP Model 3024XX with mag side balancer.

The 32 CI engines have a 3-9/16" standard bore, includes 14 HP Model 32042X, with PTO & mag side balancers, 15 HP Model 32543X, 16 HP Model 3264XX with mag side balancer. The 16 HP engine Model 326437 uses a starter and alternator rather than a starter-generator.

Well, I have a 10 HP in my tractor now with the proper cover, but found another 10 HP with a 23D cover that I built for a spare. However, I will put the proper cover on it when next I wear this build out in about 10 years, or, someone can...
