Owner's manual (2691524, 4wd) says when changing front axle oil,  add oil at the  "lower spindle cavity" fill holes......I cannot locate the fill holes. I see the drain holes,  but no fill holes......Any guidance is appreciated.

When I changed the oil in the front axle of my Legacy XL 4X4, I removed both lower drain plugs and refilled thru the upper dipstick hole. It took the required amount of 1.6 quarts to read on the dip stick.

Understood... so,  there aren't 3 fill holes (one at each spindle and one at the main dipstick) there is only one,  at the dip stick.

Gotcha!

Many thanks!

I know nothing about 4WD Legacy XL's, but that sure looks like a fill hole in @GregB's pic - since the yellow plug is on the top of the axle assembly.

Looks like a case of documentation not keeping up with the physical changes.

And worse there was never much documentation at all.

No repair manual at all, just owners manual.

Even the dealerships have just minor amounts of web based stuff they can access.
