Flo Jet question

I recently cleaned my carburetor and placed felt washers on the worn shaft to close the path of extra air in the system. The carburetor is now adjustable and the engine idles beautifully. However. While I was inside the carb, I decided to go against many years of experience, and adjust the float to level, rather than a "little high" as I always do. That is where we are.

My question, though, is why does the choke not choke anymore, or, why does it not choke enough? The linkages and control cables are all as they should be. Full choke on the dash is full choke on the carb. But, to start the engine cold, I have to remove the air cleaner and choke with my hand. The engine fires instantly and runs, with my hand choking for a couple minutes. I push it to half choke and allow it to warm, then use til finished or it runs out of gas, whichever comes first. When warm, half choke with the cable to start, then run as long as I want. This is a new one on me. Any ideas?

Make sure throttle shaft is fully closed and/or try setting the idle stop a little lower. Has a big impact on starting (even with the choke) on those. Setting the bowl level slightly lower will take a slightly stronger signal on the idle circuit to get fuel at start.

The engine has never started with the carb set to idle. Usually, I barely bump it off idle to start, maybe 1/8 throttle or less. Will have to try at idle. But, I will listen to experience and set the float a bit higher than level, where it was before I stopped the extra air around the throttle shaft. Thanks

Update of sorts. I finally got tired of removing the air cleaner to start the engine, and went back to experience, rather than instructions. I set the float a bit higher than level. The engine now starts with the choke lever at the closed position, throttle at just above idle, 'like it always did'. Basically, it starts firing and starts to run before I get the button pushed all the way down
