Oil Leak?

I noticed the last couple of times I mowed the yard some oil leaking around one of cylinder head bolts. It was a little loose so I tightened it but this didn’t seem to fix the issue. My initial thought was that I need a new head gasket but I thought I’d defer to the experts here before taking any action.

I am far from an expert, but before I would even think of replacing the head gasket I would try and clean the oil off the fins and around the bolt. Maybe the loose bolt fixed the problem and all you are seeing now is oil that had already leaked out.

this could be a long short, but it is simple and won’t cost much in time.

I have a bare B&S 10HP block here and all of the head bolt holes are blind except for the one between the intake and exhaust. I don't see how oil from the crankcase can get on top of the cylinder head. Therefore, I think it came from somewhere else.

Torque head bolts in 3 equal steps to 190 in-lbs using the sequence in the manual.

Uh, yeah. I remember one time trying to chase down an oil leak.
Finally found the culprit: Hot oil dripped off the dipstick onto the engine!
Boy, did I feel :/ !

as for head gasket do a compression check and clean that area as was already mentioned,  before you tear anything apart, will save ya a lot of work

In regards to head gaskets, there is an old style, P/N 270273 and new style, P/N 692230 made of Garfoil. The material they are made of is different. Try to use the old style.
