Starter/Generator refurb

Feeling more like working a little in the shop and I set this small project aside just for this purpose. I've got 2 or 3 starter/generators on the shelf in the basement and all now need a cleanup and refurb. Last good one went onto my early B10 last summer. Pulled this one off to pull apart not remembering exactly why I pulled it from the tractor. I watched @ZippoVarga youtube and grabbed a box of parts (1 of 2) I had on the shelf.  IMG_1203.thumb.jpg.12deeb0731ec828bdfb587792319d164.jpg

Back bearing was fairly tight but front one was loose and rattling. Brushes were surprisingly good shape; will replace with new but keep the old ones - you know that drill.  Lots of crud insideIMG_1200.thumb.jpg.c14dea379198cc40b5227183769b57f4.jpgIMG_1202.thumb.jpg.438b961cd18a8705aad677835ef29a0e.jpg

As I was getting ready to put back together I saw the real problem - broken contact wire.IMG_1206.thumb.jpg.77f1ef1243a03a18a98146471e91569e.jpg

Soldered the broken wire to the F contact and put slid it together.IMG_1207.thumb.jpg.63311a72bf1466a052cb2176fe01ba00.jpg

Seems like there is a slight drag in one place but crossing my fingers for successful test.

Have been through probably a dozen or more of these. The stud to the A - coil is hard to replace. I have not been successful with that yet. Bearings and brushes aren’t too bad. Sometimes the problem is a bad field or armature. I haven’t replaced a field yet. The tapered screw is very difficult to remove.

This gives me some motivation to rebuild the two bad ones I have sitting on the shelf! The 23d is still here for you.

In all I brought 3 starter generators to the shop to test and rebuild. Interestingly the 1st one that I soldered was junk so I tore it apart, saved brushes screws and bolts, and threw it in the metal pile. Second one was an older model with oil port above each bearing. Front bearing was loose so I replaced it, blew it out with compressed air, and reassembled. IMG_1211.thumb.jpg.217dbb0e9cfae9812918bdf28fb613c9.jpg

Note the older all metal bearingsIMG_1210.thumb.jpg.52405af10f808ff9a0d36e16faca6651.jpg

Labeled the 2 I put back on the shelf:
