Steering wheel fix.

Has anybody had any luck "glueing" a broke steering wheel?  Like an epoxy? or some other type of adhesive?  The steering wheel on my 738 is broke in 2 places.  I have an ad looking for another one, but in the meantime, looking to see if there is any ideas, or maybe something you have tried, to fix it.

Thanks,

Mike.

Without seeing the broken wheel, I would suggest trying something like doctors do with broken bones.  Bend some copper pipe to shape of the wheel and wrap around the wheel with good old duct tape.  Or wrap around with fibreglass strips and impregnate with resin.

When I broke one on a 7117, I lined the sides up and drilled them then installed a drywall screw. Been holding for years.

Thanks guys for the ideas, I was thinking how I could "splice" it together.  It's not a spoke, it's the ring itself broke in 2 places., between spokes.  Not sure what they are made of, it's like a "bakelite" product.

Steering wheel is a high stress part. Doubt any kind of repair other than with some sort of screw as suggested above will last.

Could try the screw method if the break is right by drilling through on an angle and recessing the screw head. Either that or use a dremel and install some sort of pins.

I would try 'JBweld Plastic bonder' rather than a generic 2 part epoxy to smooth it all up and help stick the pin/screw repair back together better. Been having good luck using that product fixing broken Marx & Lionel train shells.

Reality is though that  by the time you buy the adhesive and spend all the time on the repair, you would have enough  in it to just about buy another used steering wheel...

I live in Oconomowoc and have a number of steering wheels.  I don't have an original for the 738 (it would have been a 2/3 circle "crescent moon" type)  But I do have  a few different ones to choose from.  414-807-7182  and we'll get you fixed up.

Thanks Brettw, I will be giving you a call this morning, about 9 ish?  I'll measure the diameter of the post that it fits over.  I'll be calling from 262-642-3653.

Hopefully you're all set now, a little bigger diameter, but the same ol' "bakelite" steering wheel. You just have to "hand over hand" a lot faster when racin' the ol' 728.  666

Brett, the steering wheel fits fine, do you have any left?  I could use another one.

Thanks,

Mike.
